This place sits on the border of British Columbia and Alberta in Canada. It is located right on the Continental Divide. This divide sits partly in Banff National Park and partly in Jasper National Park. The ice field is a very important part of the mountain landscape.

The ice field sits on wide, flat layers of rock. These flat layers do not wear away as fast as the tilted rocks nearby. Because they stay high up, the area stays very cold. This cold weather helps the ice stay thick. The ice field was first made during the Great Glaciation. This was a long time ago, between 238,000 and 126,000 BCE. Later, the ice moved forward again during the Late Wisconsinan period. This happened between 18,000 and 9,000 BCE.

For a long time, people did not visit this place. The weather was too harsh and the area was too far away. In 1827, a botanist named David Douglas climbed a nearby peak. He wrote about a giant mountain in his journal. In 1884, Arthur Philemon Coleman looked for that mountain. He found the path that became the Icefield Parkway. In 1898, J. Norman Collie and his friends explored the area. They climbed Mount Athabasca and saw the ice field for the first time.

Many brave people explored the ice field later. In 1902, James Outram climbed Mount Columbia and Mount Bryce. He also found four new mountain passes. In 1923, three climbers reached North Twin Peak and Mount Saskatchewan. In 1927, A. J. Ostheimer climbed thirty different peaks. He spent 63 days exploring the area. In 1932, three men went on a long ski trip. They skied down from Snow Dome for a very long time. This was a huge event for skiers everywhere.

The physical structure of the ice field is shaped by the geology beneath it. The ice sits on large areas of relatively horizontal rock layers. These flat-lying layers erode much more slowly than the tilted rock areas surrounding them. Because these layers do not wear away quickly, the surface remains at a higher altitude. This high elevation helps the area stay much colder than lower ground. This constant cold is necessary to maintain the massive ice sheets.

History shows that the ice field has moved through several major stages of growth. It was first formed during the Great Glaciation, also known as the Illinoisan period, between 238,000 and 126,000 BCE. The ice initially stopped advancing during the Early Wisconsinan period, which lasted from 73,000 to 62,000 BCE. A major advancement occurred later during the Late Wisconsinan period from 18,000 to 9,000 BCE. The last significant period of ice advancement was the Little Ice Age. This era lasted from approximately 1200 AD until 1900 AD. Within this timeframe, the Athabasca Glacier peaked around 1800 before beginning a period of recession.

Because of its isolation and harsh weather, the ice field was one of the last major geological features in western Canada visited by Europeans. In 1827, the Scottish botanist David Douglas climbed a nearby peak and described a giant mountain in his journal. In 1884, geology professor Arthur Philemon Coleman explored the Great Divide. While he did not find Douglas's giant peak, he discovered the route that became the Icefield Parkway. In 1898, J. Norman Collie and his companions, Hugh Stutfield and Herman Wooley, explored the area. On August 18, they climbed the east side of Mount Athabasca and discovered the vast ice field.

Many explorers followed, performing remarkable feats of mountaineering. In 1902, James Outram made ten first ascents of peaks and discovered four new mountain passes. He successfully climbed Mount Columbia and the difficult Mount Bryce. In 1923, climbers James Munroe Thorington and W. S. Ladd joined guide Conrad Kain to summit North Twin Peak, Mount Columbia, and Mount Saskatchewan in just five days. In 1927, A. J. Ostheimer spent 63 days in the area. He climbed thirty different peaks, twenty-five of which were first ascents. In 1932, Cliff White, Joe Weiss, and Russell Bennet completed a massive skiing journey. They performed a downhill descent of almost 1,500 meters from Snow Dome. This was the longest continuous ski run in Canadian history at that time.

The ice field acts as a massive source of water for the region. It feeds six major glaciers: the Athabasca, Castleguard, Columbia, Dome, Stutfield, and Saskatchewan glaciers. It also serves as the origin point for the Athabasca River and the North Saskatchewan River. These rivers, along with the headwaters of the Columbia River, flow away from the ice field. Because the ice field sits atop a triple Continental Divide, the water travels to three different oceans. Some flows north to the Arctic Ocean, some east to Hudson Bay, and some south and west to the Pacific Ocean.

The environment here is characterized by an alpine climate. This is because the local weather station is located at an altitude of 2,134 meters. The average annual temperature in this region is -1.1 degrees Celsius. July is typically the warmest month, with an average temperature of 4.4 degrees Celsius. This cold, high-altitude climate is what allows the glaciers to persist. Today, mountaineers and skiers still travel from all over the world to explore these historic routes.
