Colchis was a significant ancient polity located on the eastern coast of the Black Sea.

In modern geography, this territory covers western Georgia and parts of modern Turkey and Russia. It includes the Georgian provinces of Samegrelo, Imereti, Guria, Adjara, Svaneti, and Racha. It also encompasses the Abkhazia region. To the south, the territory reaches into the Turkish provinces of Artvin, Rize, and Trabzon. In Russia, it includes the Sochi and Tuapse districts.

This region is often called the earliest Georgian formation. It worked alongside the Kingdom of Iberia to help form the Georgian nation.

The people of Colchis are known as the Colchians. Most scholars believe they were early Zan-speaking tribes. These tribes are the linguistic ancestors of modern Laz and Mingrelian peoples. They are part of the larger Kartvelian-speaking group. This group eventually developed into the modern Georgian ethnic identity. While their roots are deep, their exact ethnic makeup remains somewhat obscure. Some burials show names from Greek, Anatolian, or Iranian cultures. This suggests the population was quite diverse. In the city of Dioscurias, sources say between 70 and 300 languages were spoken.

The geography of Colchis is defined by distinct natural boundaries. To the north, the Greater Caucasus mountains form a barrier. To the south, the Lesser Caucasus and the Black Sea Eastern Mountains border the land. The Likhi Range connects these two mountain systems in the east.

The central part of the region is the Colchis Plain. This plain sits between Sukhumi and Kobuleti. Much of this land is at a very low elevation. The climate here is mild and humid. Near Batumi, the annual rainfall is extremely high. In fact, it is the highest in continental western Eurasia. This moisture supports temperate rainforests and lush wetlands.

Colchis is famous in Greek mythology as a land of great wealth. It was the destination for the Argonauts in their search for the Golden Fleece. The myth also names Medea as a resident of this land.

Ancient writers described the region as rich in gold, iron, timber, and honey. These resources were exported to many ancient Hellenic city-states. The Colchian plain provided excellent grazing land for cattle and horses. The Phasis River, now known as the Rioni, was a vital waterway. It flowed from the Caucasus toward the Black Sea. Many other rivers, like the Charieis and Chobus, also moved through the territory.

Archaeological evidence shows the advanced nature of Colchian society. Excavations at sites like Vani have uncovered beautiful gold objects.

These include intricate bracelets and necklaces. Other finds include bronze items, such as a lamp featuring Heracles and elephants.

The region also had important urban centers. These included Dioscurias, which the Romans called Sebastopolis. Other major towns were Pityus, Apsaros, and the city of Aia, now Kutaisi. These cities served as hubs for trade and local governance.

Historical records link Colchis to even older civilizations. The name may come from the Urartian word Qulha. In the eighth century BC, King Sarduri II of Urartu claimed victory over Qulha.

Assyrian inscriptions also provide clues about the region. King Tukulti-Ninurta I fought many kings near the shores of the Upper Sea. The Upper Sea was the ancient name for the Black Sea. Later, Tiglath-Pileser I also campaigned near these shores. His inscriptions mention Gilhi, which some scholars read as Kilhi or Colchis. These records show that the region was known to powerful empires long ago.

The natural environment of Colchis contains many unique biological features. It has a high number of relict plants and animals. These are species that have survived from much older geological periods. Examples include five species of Rhododendrons and various evergreen shrubs. The region is also home to the Caucasian salamander and the Caucasian parsley frog. Eight endemic species of lizards, known as Darevskia, live here. There are even unique cave shrimp and the Caucasus adder. This biodiversity makes the Colchis region a very special part of the natural world.
