The history of this software began a long time ago. A man named Jef Raskin started the Macintosh project in late 1978. He wanted a low-cost computer for everyone to use. Later, Steve Jobs took over the project in January 1981. Apple engineers also looked at ideas from a computer called the Xerox Alto. This helped them create the menu bar and pull-down menus. Susan Kare designed the famous icons used to represent folders and apps.

There are many interesting facts about the different versions. The first Macintosh was released on January 24, 1984. Early versions could only run one application at a time. Later, a tool called MultiFinder let users see many windows at once. Apple changed the name to Mac OS in 1996 with version 7.6. The last major release was Mac OS 9 in 1999.

Classic Mac OS allowed users to interact with the computer through visual elements like icons and menus. This shift made computing more accessible to the average consumer rather than just specialists.

The architecture of the system relied on two main components: the Macintosh Toolbox ROM and the "System Folder." The ROM, or Read-Only Memory, was a physical chip on the computer's motherboard that held essential code.

Because the initial Macintosh had only 128KiB of RAM, engineers used a 64kB ROM to save precious memory. This ROM also allowed the computer to show graphics immediately upon starting up. If the system encountered a boot-time error, it could display a visual icon or use a specific sound, such as the "Chime of Death." The System Folder was a collection of files loaded from a disk that provided additional software functions. This structure allowed the operating system to manage hardware and software tasks through a combination of permanent and removable code.

As the software evolved, its ability to handle multiple tasks changed significantly. Early versions of the System Software could only run one application at a time. To solve this, developers created a system extension called Switcher for the Macintosh 512K. This allowed multiple programs to remain loaded in the computer's memory. However, each program used the memory exclusively, so the user had to activate one to see it. Later, System 5 introduced MultiFinder, a cooperative multitasking extension. MultiFinder allowed users to see multiple program windows in a layered view over the desktop. This functionality was eventually integrated directly into System 7 as part of the core operating system.

The history of the Macintosh project began in late 1978 with Jef Raskin. He envisioned a low-cost, easy-to-use computer for everyday people. In January 1981, Steve Jobs took over the project. Apple engineers also studied the Xerox Alto computer to develop GUI concepts. One unique aspect of the Classic Mac OS was its dual-forked file system. Most other operating systems, like DOS or Windows, use a single "fork" for files. In contrast, the Macintosh File System (MFS) and later the Hierarchical File System (HFS) used two parts. The data fork held the primary information, such as the text in a document. The resource fork held structured data, including sounds, graphics, and menu definitions.

While this allowed for rich, interactive files, it created challenges for interoperability. If a file was moved to a non-Mac system, the resource fork was often stripped away. To prevent this, users had to use encoding schemes like BinHex to keep both forks together.

During the mid-1990s, the operating system faced intense competition and technical criticism. Other systems, including Windows NT, Linux, and NeXTSTEP, offered features like pre-emptive multitasking and protected memory. Classic Mac OS struggled with limited memory management and conflicts between system extensions. These technical issues contributed to a decline in Apple's market share. Apple attempted to create successors called Taligent and Copland, but both projects were aborted. Following Steve Jobs's return to Apple in 1997, a new four-year development effort began to replace the aging system.

In 2001, Apple officially replaced Classic Mac OS with Mac OS X. Although the two systems had completely different architectures and origins, Mac OS X retained many visual design elements from its predecessor. To help users move between systems, Apple created the Classic Environment. This was a compatibility layer that allowed older software to run on the new operating system. The final updates to Mac OS 9 were released in 2001 to ensure it could work alongside Mac OS X.

Today, the term "Classic" is still used to distinguish this historical era of Apple computing from the modern macOS.
