Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl is a major urban center located in the State of Mexico.
The geography of the region has changed completely over time. Until the 20th century, this land was part of Lake Texcoco. It was an uninhabited lake bed. The process of draining the interconnected lakes of the Valley of Mexico began during the early colonial period. The first major drainage project started in 1590. This was intended to stop the chronic flooding in Mexico City. During the Mexican War of Independence, flooding remained a serious problem. A new project began to drain Lake Texcoco directly. In 1912, the lake area became federal property. Massive drainage efforts continued until the 1930s. This transformed the water into new, dry land. The government eventually sold this land to private owners.
As the land became available, the first settlements appeared. These were extensions of nearby municipalities like Chimalhuacán, La Paz, and Ecatepec. The area was once home to a bird called the chichicuilote-atziztizuilotl. This species lived in the local lakes and ponds. Today, this bird is nearly extinct. The early settlers faced many challenges regarding infrastructure. They lacked basic public services like electricity and potable water. In 1945, the Xochiaca dam and the Tequixquiac tunnel were built. These projects allowed for the diversion of drinking water. This enabled the creation of the first formal neighborhoods. These included Juárez, Pantitlán, México, and El Sol. By 1949, the population reached 2,000 people.
The population grew rapidly during the 1950s. Many people migrated from other parts of Mexico to find work. The population reached 40,000 by 1954. Even then, services like electricity were often missing. By 1959, thirty-three neighborhoods protested the lack of water. In 1960, leaders proposed creating a new municipality. They wanted to separate the area from Chimalhuacán. On April 3, 1963, the municipality of Nezahualcóyotl was officially created. Jorge Sáenza Gómez Knoth became the first municipal president. This new status helped provide pavement, sewers, and streetlights. By the 1980s, the city had hospitals, schools, and a Museum of Archeology. The population surpassed one million people by 1995.
Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl contains several significant landmarks. The Neza 86 Stadium was built in 1981. It was re-inaugurated for the 1986 FIFA World Cup.
Social dynamics in the city are complex. Some residents of Mexico City call it "Neza York." This name refers to its massive, sprawling size. The city is known for having a high crime rate. In the 1990s, youth subcultures called "cholos" formed.
Today, the city remains a place of movement and connection. Many natives of Nezahualcóyotl have immigrated to the United States. A large number of them settle in New York. This migration has helped create a new Mexican subculture in that area. The city also shows a mix of modern and traditional life. While it has modern buildings and universities, some areas still use donkey carts for trash collection.
