His military journey began with a failed attempt to volunteer for the Finnish Army during the Winter War. After joining the RAF, he initially trained to be a pilot in South Africa. However, he suffered a failure of his optic nerve, which meant he could no longer fly. Instead of leaving the service, he showed great initiative by applying for intelligence work. He was eventually commissioned as an officer and attached to the No. 260 Squadron RAF.

As an intelligence officer, Lee's responsibilities were vast and required him to be highly informed. His squadron moved through many locations during the North African Campaign, including Egypt, Libya, and Tunisia. He supported ground forces as the squadron flew missions near places like Tobruk, Benghazi, and Tripoli. Lee even served as a liaison to the Army during the Battle of Monte Cassino. He was attached to the Gurkhas of the 8th Indian Infantry Division during this time. He eventually reached the rank of flight lieutenant before being discharged in 1946.

Lee's early life was marked by significant changes and international travel. He was born in London in 1922 to Lieutenant Colonel Geoffrey Lee and Countess Estelle Marie. His parents separated when he was four and divorced two years later. This led to his mother taking him and his sister to Switzerland. While living there, he played his first acting role as Rumpelstiltskin. He later attended Wellington College, where he won scholarships in the classics. There, he studied Ancient Greek and Latin, which helped build his academic foundation.

After the war ended, Lee's service took him to various parts of Europe. He was seconded to the Central Registry of War Criminals and Security Suspects. In this role, he used his fluency in French, Italian, and German to help track down Nazi war criminals. This period of his life connected his military expertise with the complex political landscape of post-war Europe. His diverse experiences in the military and his classical education eventually provided the depth for his legendary acting career.
