He was the second of five children. His family moved to Paris when he was five. He loved art more than the diplomat job his parents wanted. In 1928, he opened a small art gallery. He sold art by famous painters like Pablo Picasso. Later, he worked for designers like Robert Piguet and Lucien Lelong. These jobs helped him learn the art of fashion.

In 1947, Dior changed fashion with his "New Look." This collection was called the Corolle line. It featured rounded shoulders and very full skirts. The dresses also had tiny, cinched waists. This style was very different from the boxy clothes of World War II. It helped women feel beautiful and happy again. One famous outfit from this time was the Bar suit. It became a symbol of his new way of dressing.

Dior created many different styles called "lines" over the years. He had the Envol line in 1948 and the H-line in 1954. The H-line was controversial because it bound the torso. He also made the Tulip line in 1953. His styles changed as the world changed. Some clothes were stiff, while others were more relaxed. Even after he died in 1957, his house continued. A young designer named Yves Saint Laurent helped lead the way.

Christian Dior was a legendary French fashion designer. He founded one of the world's most successful fashion houses, Christian Dior SE. His brand achieved global fame across five continents within just one decade. Dior viewed fashion as a profound art form. He believed it served as a way to preserve French cultural heritage. To him, maintaining fashion traditions was an act of faith. He wanted to protect the beauty and mystery that fashion brings to society.

Dior’s journey began in Granville, a seaside town in Normandy, France.

He was the second of five children born to Maurice Dior and Madeleine Martin. Although his family hoped he would become a diplomat, Dior chose art. He once sold fashion sketches outside his home for ten cents each. In 1928, he opened a small art gallery with a friend. There, he sold works by famous artists like Pablo Picasso. This period allowed him to build friendships with creators like Salvador Dalí and Jean Cocteau. These artistic connections deeply influenced his later approach to design.

Life brought many challenges to Dior during the Great Depression. His family business faced financial trouble, and his gallery closed after the deaths of his mother and brother. To earn money, Dior returned to selling fashion sketches. These drawings were discovered by the designer Robert Piguet. Dior worked for Piguet starting in 1937 and designed three collections. Piguet taught him that true elegance must come through simplicity.

Later, Dior worked for Lucien Lelong. During World War II, he helped maintain the French fashion industry. This was vital because exporting dresses helped the French economy survive. Lelong argued that Paris couture could not be uprooted by any nation.

In 1946, Dior made a bold move to start his own brand. With the support of businessman Marcel Boussac, he founded his fashion house. Dior insisted on having exclusive control and receiving one-third of all profits. He was a very superstitious man. He often consulted astrologers before making big decisions. He even sought approval from two separate clairvoyants before accepting Boussac's six million francs. This combination of business skill and spiritual belief helped shape his unique career.

On February 12, 1947, Dior debuted his first collection, named the Corolle line. The name refers to a circlet of flower petals. This collection introduced the "New Look," a term coined by Carmel Snow of Harper's Bazaar. The New Look featured rounded shoulders, cinched waists, and very full skirts. This style was much more voluptuous than the boxy, fabric-conserving clothes used during wartime rationing. One of the most famous pieces from this era was the Bar suit. This collection helped reestablish Paris as the center of the fashion world.

Throughout his career, Dior released many different "lines" that defined the era. In 1948, he presented the Envol and Cyclone lines. In 1950, he introduced the Vertical and Oblique lines. Some of these designs caused debate. For example, his 1954 H-line was controversial. It was meant to create a youthful look inspired by 16th-century portraits. However, it actually bound the torso from the neckline to the hips. Critics even called the required undergarments "ban the bosom" bras. Despite such debates, Dior constantly moved between highly structured forms and more relaxed styles.

Dior’s influence extended to footwear through partnerships with designers like Perugia and Delman. He worked closely with Roger Vivier, who became his preferred shoe designer. Even after Dior's death in 1957, his legacy continued through his successors. A young Yves Saint Laurent became his assistant in 1955. Dior had already chosen Saint Laurent to eventually lead the house. Today, the Dior name remains a global symbol of high fashion and artistic tradition.
