At age 12, he began learning about the ANC from his father. By age 15, he joined the ANC Youth League. This was a bold move because political activity was banned at Black schools under apartheid laws.
Hani pursued higher education at the University of Fort Hare in the Eastern Cape. There, he studied English, Latin, and both modern and classical literature. He was deeply involved in protests against the Bantu Education Act. This act was a law used by the apartheid government to control the education of Black citizens. After graduation, Hani joined the armed wing of the ANC, known as uMkhonto we Sizwe. He felt his commitment to the armed struggle came from his own class background and his exposure to the extremes of apartheid.
Because of his military involvement, Hani had to live in exile for many years. He traveled to the Soviet Union to receive military training. He also participated in the Zimbabwean War of Liberation, also called the Rhodesian Bush War. These were joint operations between MK and the Zimbabwe People's Revolutionary Army. During this time, Hani helped build a reputation as a skilled soldier. In 1969, he co-signed the "Hani Memorandum." This document was a critique of the ANC leadership. It called for the movement to become more radical and urged leaders to be more accountable to the fighters.
In 1990, the ANC was unbanned, and Hani returned to South Africa permanently. He took over as the leader of the SACP on 8 December 1991. Although he had been a soldier, Hani supported the move toward peaceful negotiations. He believed in a multi-party political system. He also advocated for a socialist economy. Hani wanted to see radical economic reform and social redistribution. He worked to protect labor rights to improve the economy after apartheid ended.
On 10 April 1993, Hani was assassinated in Dawn Park, Boksburg. Janusz Waluś, a Polish immigrant and supporter of the Conservative Party, shot him outside his home. Waluś was arrested after a witness named Margareta Harmse saw him. Clive Derby-Lewis, a member of the Conservative Party, was also arrested for his role in the crime. The assassination caused massive tension across South Africa. Many feared the country would fall into widespread violence. However, Nelson Mandela appealed for calm in a famous speech. This helped ensure that democratic elections could take place on 27 April 1994.

Hani's influence remains significant in South African history. At the time of his death, he was the most popular ANC leader after Nelson Mandela. He played a key role in uniting the SACP, the ANC, and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU). His legacy is honored in many ways. One of the largest hospitals in the world, Baragwanath Hospital, was renamed the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in 1997. There is also an opera about his life, and his life inspired music by the Dave Matthews Band. He remains a global symbol of resistance against injustice.
