Chongming is a large island.

Chongming Island sits in the Yangtze River in East China.
Long ago, the island was not one big piece. It started as small groups of sand and land. The Yangtze River caused many changes. Some islands grew, while others sank into the water. Over many years, these pieces joined together. People even worked to make the island much larger. Between 1950 and 2010, the island doubled in size.
Today, the island has many green spaces. You can visit Dongping National Forest Park. It is the largest forest park in Shanghai. There are also wetlands and nature reserves. You might even see rare finless porpoises in the water.
Chongming Island is a large piece of land in the Yangtze River. It sits in East China, right where the river meets the East China Sea. The island splits the river into two separate paths. One path flows north and the other flows south. It is the northernmost part of the city of Shanghai. You can reach central Shanghai from the island in about two hours.
This island has a very busy history of changing shape. Long ago, it started as two separate groups of sand called Xisha and Dongsha. During the Tang dynasty, these pieces were far apart. The Yangtze River caused many changes over the centuries. Sometimes new islands like Yaoliusha rose from the water. Other times, many islands sank back into the river. By the year 1681, many of these pieces joined to form the island we see today.
People have lived and worked on the island for a long time. Early settlers were often fishermen or people who collected salt. Later, migrants brought cotton to the area. They grew cotton and made textiles to send to other places. The island also has a special connection to the land of Jiangsu. Because the island grew so much, two small parts of Jiangsu are now tucked into the north shore. These are called pene-exclaves.
Today, the island is a place for nature and industry. Large projects in the 1960s and 1990s helped the island grow. In fact, the island doubled in size between 1950 and 2010. It is now a center for building ships and maritime equipment. Many people also visit the island to see its beautiful sights.
There are many wonderful things to see and do on Chongming. The island is home to Dongping National Forest Park. This is the largest forest park in Shanghai. You can also visit the Dongtan Nature Reserve or the Chongxi Wetland Park. If you look in the water, you might see rare finless porpoises. The island even holds fun events like a cricket fighting tournament and a hairy crab festival.
Chongming Island is a large alluvial island located in the Yangtze River. It sits in East China where the river meets the East China Sea. The island divides the Yangtze into two distinct channels. One channel flows to the north and the other to the south. Chongming is the northernmost part of the Shanghai municipality. It is about two hours away from central Shanghai.
The island is an alluvial feature, meaning it was formed by river sediment. This process makes the land shape change quite often. The island has an average elevation of 3 meters above sea level. The northwest and central areas are slightly higher than the east and southwest. The island includes the islands of Changxing and Hengsha. Together, these three form the Chongming District. Most of the island belongs to Shanghai, but the north shore is unique. Two pene-exclaves of Jiangsu province sit on the northern coast. These are small pieces of land that are almost entirely surrounded by Shanghai.
Historically, Chongming began as two separate shoals named Xisha and Dongsha. These appeared during the Wude Era of the Tang dynasty. They were originally located south of the island of Dongbuzhou. Over many centuries, the Yangtze River floods caused the islands to shift. New islands like Yaoliusha and Sansha rose from the water at different times. Other islands, such as Yingqiansha and Matuosha, formed during the Yuan dynasty. However, the shifting sands made the area unstable. The county seat had to be moved repeatedly because of these changes. In the 14th century, the area was organized within Yangzhou.
During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the island's geography was very active. Many new shoals arose, such as Ma'ansha and Gaomingsha. Some of these lasted for a long time, while others sank quickly. Between 1522 and 1722, many islands flooded or collapsed back into the river. For example, the islands of Yaoliusha and Sansha eroded away. Xisha and several others also sank during this period. By 1681, the remaining islands merged to form the modern shape of Chongming. Although it was more unified by then, the island was still much smaller than it is today.
The population and economy of the island have changed significantly over time. Early settlers were mostly fishermen and salt collectors. They operated a principal saltern at Tianci. Later, migrants from Pudong and Songjiang introduced cotton cultivation. They produced textiles to send to developed areas like Hangzhou. In the modern era, large-scale reclamation projects changed the land. These projects worked on the northern and eastern tidal flats. Because of this work, the island's size doubled between 1950 and 2010. Today, the island is a center for shipbuilding and maritime equipment. The Chongming Industrial Zone was established in 1994.
Nature and tourism are very important to the island today. It is home to several protected areas and parks. Dongping National Forest Park is located in the center of the island. It is the largest forest park in Shanghai. The island also contains the Dongtan Nature Reserve and the Chongxi Wetland Park. In the water, scientists have found stable numbers of endangered finless porpoises. These animals belong to two different subspecies. The island is divided into three main tourism zones: East, Central, and West Chongming. Each zone offers different activities, such as visiting wetlands or orchards.
Cultural traditions still thrive on Chongming Island. The island features several religious sites, including the Chongming Confucian Temple.
