Chital live in groups. Most groups are led by females. These are called matriarchal herds. A herd can have up to 100 deer. They stay in groups to stay safe. If they sense danger, they flee together. They can even leap over fences.

Later, Charles Hamilton Smith placed them in a group called Axis in 1827. In 1987, Colin P. Groves and Peter Grubb made Axis its own group. A study in 2006 helped show how they are related to other deer. These studies help us know where the chital fits in the tree of life.

There are many interesting facts about how they live. A large male can weigh up to 70 kilograms.

Chital are also found far away from their original homes. They were brought to Australia in the early 1800s. Some live on the islands of Hawaii, too. On the island of Molokai, there were 50,000 to 70,000 deer by 2021. This was much more than the 7,500 people living there. Because they have no natural predators in Hawaii, their numbers grew very fast. This shows how animals can change a new place when they move there.

It is commonly known as the spotted deer or the axis deer. These animals play a vital role in the ecosystems of the forests and grasslands they inhabit. The name "chital" comes from the Sanskrit word cītal, which means "variegated" or "spotted." This name shares a similar linguistic origin with the word for cheetah. Understanding the chital helps scientists study how deer species adapt to different environments around the world.

Physically, the chital is characterized by its distinct coloration and sexual dimorphism. Sexual dimorphism means that males and females have different physical traits.

They begin as soft tissues known as velvet antlers. Through a process called mineralization, these tissues gradually harden into bone. This hardening moves from the tip of the antler down to the base. As the blood vessels in the tissue are blocked, the structure becomes solid. The chital's antlers are three-pronged and nearly 30 centimeters long. Scientific studies show their mineral content includes copper, cobalt, and zinc.

Taxonomy is the science of naming and classifying living things. The chital was first described by Johann Christian Polycarp Erxleben in 1777 as Cervus axis.

In 1827, Charles Hamilton Smith placed them in the subgenus Axis. Later, in 1987, Colin P. Groves and Peter Grubb elevated Axis to its own genus. Phylogenetic studies, which look at evolutionary relationships, have clarified its history. The chital belongs to a clade, or a closely related group, with the barasingha and Schomburgk's deer. It is estimated that the chital diverged from the Rucervus lineage during the Early Pliocene.

In their natural habitat, chital exhibit specific social and survival behaviors. They typically live in matriarchal herds.

To avoid heat, they rest in the shade during the summer when temperatures reach 40 degrees Celsius. They are most active at dusk or during the cooler hours before sunrise. When threatened, they flee in groups and use their white underparts to signal alarm while running.

Chital are also known for their ability to survive in diverse landscapes. They range from 8 to 30 degrees north in countries like India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.

They inhabit both deciduous forests and open grasslands. However, when introduced to new areas, their population growth can change the environment. In Hawaii, the lack of natural predators caused populations to grow by 20 to 30 percent each year. By 2021, the island of Molokai had between 50,000 and 70,000 deer. This massive number was much larger than the human population of 7,500 people on that island.

These deer interact with many other species within their food webs. Predators such as tigers, leopards, and Indian pythons hunt the chital. Other animals, like the common myna and langurs, provide alarm calls that the chital can recognize. This interconnectedness shows how the chital is a central part of its biological community. Whether in the forests of India or the introduced populations in Texas and Australia, the chital remains a highly adaptable and successful species.
