The Chinese Soviet Republic was a unique state within China. It was started by leaders of the Chinese Communist Party. These leaders were Mao Zedong and Zhu De. They proclaimed the new state on 7 November 1931. This happened during the early part of the Chinese Civil War. The state was not one solid piece of land. Instead, it was made of many separate areas.

These areas included 18 provinces and 4 counties. Most of these lands were located in southern China.

Running a state requires many different parts. The Chinese Soviet Republic had a central government. It also had local and regional governments. They built a school system and a court system. The state even had its own bank. Mao Zemin led the creation of the National Bank in 1932.

The government made its own money to use. They printed paper bills and made copper coins. They also made silver dollars. Most of their money came from taxes on rice and grain.

One of the biggest changes involved the land. Before this, a few rich landlords owned most of the land. The state passed the Land Law in 1931 to change this. They took land from rich peasants and landlords. Then, they gave that land to poor peasants. By 1932, the state had helped make land ownership more equal. This was very important to the people who worked the fields. The poor peasants became the main supporters of the government.

Life was very difficult because of constant fighting. The Kuomintang army tried to surround the Soviet areas. These were called encirclement campaigns. In 1933, the Kuomintang used new strategies to build forts. These forts helped them block the Red Army. The fighting caused the Soviet areas to shrink quickly. Many people and much equipment were lost during these battles.

The state reached its largest size in 1933. At that time, it ruled over 3.4 million people.

In 1934, the leaders decided to move. They began a long journey called the Long March. About 130,000 soldiers and civilians started this trek. Many people had to leave their homes to find safety. Eventually, some survivors reached a place called Yan'an. The Chinese Soviet Republic was officially dissolved on 22 September 1937. This happened because the Communist Party made an alliance with the Kuomintang. They wanted to work together to fight Japan.

The Chinese Soviet Republic (CSR) was a unique state established within the Republic of China. It was proclaimed on 7 November 1931 by Chinese Communist Party (CCP) leaders Mao Zedong and Zhu De. This occurred during the early stages of the Chinese Civil War. The CSR was not a single, connected piece of land. Instead, it consisted of discontiguous territories across 18 provinces and 4 counties. Most of these areas were located in southern China, south of the Yellow River.

Running a state requires complex systems of administration. The CSR established a central government alongside local and regional governments. It created its own institutions, including an education system and a court system. The state also managed its own economy through the Chinese Soviet Republic National Bank. This bank was established on 1 February 1932, with Mao Zemin serving as its president. The Central Mint issued three types of currency: paper bills, copper coins, and silver dollars.

The government funded its operations primarily through taxes on grain and rice. It also received voluntary contributions from the peasantry, who were its core supporters. The CSR's most significant policy was land redistribution. Through the 1931 Land Law, the state confiscated property from landlords and rich peasants. This land was then redistributed to poor peasants and farm laborers. By 1932, the party had equalized landholding and eliminated debt within the CSR. This policy destroyed the old landlord-dominated political economy.

At its peak in 1933, the CSR governed a population exceeding 3.4 million people. This population lived across an area of approximately 70,000 square kilometers. The largest and best-administered territory was the Jiangxi Soviet in southeastern China. Its capital was the city of Ruijin. Because of this central role, the term "Jiangxi Soviet" is sometimes used to describe the entire CSR. Other component territories included the Eyuwan, Xianggan, and Shaanxi-Gansu soviets.

The state faced constant military pressure from the Kuomintang (KMT). The National Revolutionary Army launched several "encirclement campaigns" to destroy the soviets. The Jiangxi Soviet initially survived the first three campaigns using flexible guerrilla tactics. However, leadership changes led to a rapid decline. New leaders like Wang Ming and Otto Braun took control of military strategy. Their command was often described as incompetent, leading to extreme left-wing governance. By the fifth encirclement campaign in 1933, the KMT used Nazi advisors to build fortified blockhouses. This strategy successfully blocked the Red Army and caused massive losses in manpower and equipment.

In October 1934, the CCP leaders organized a massive evacuation. This retreat became known as the Long March. Approximately 130,000 soldiers and civilians began the breakout from the Jiangxi Soviet. The journey was extremely difficult and resulted in heavy casualties. Of the 86,000 troops who attempted the initial breakout, only 36,000 successfully escaped. Over the next two years, Communist forces abandoned almost all their southern soviets. The survivors eventually moved to the Yan'an Soviet in the Shaan-Gan-Ning Border Region.

The formal existence of the CSR ended due to shifting political alliances. In 1936, the Xi'an Incident occurred, where Chiang Kai-shek was kidnapped. This forced negotiations between the CCP and the Kuomintang. The CCP offered to abolish the CSR and place the Red Army under KMT control. In exchange, they sought autonomy and an alliance against Japan. This led to the creation of the Second United Front. The CSR was officially dissolved on 22 September 1937. Following this, the Yan'an Soviet was reconstituted as new border regions.
