The name "Chișinău" has several possible origins that historians debate. One theory suggests it comes from archaic Romanian words. These words mean "new" and "spring" or "source of water." This might refer to a small spring near Pușkin and Albișoara streets. Another theory involves the name of a place in Western Romania. This place is called Chișineu, which comes from the Hungarian name Kisjenő. In that case, the name relates to the Jenő Hungarian tribe. A third theory from linguist Kiss Lajos suggests a different root. He proposes the name comes from the Cuman word "kešene," meaning grave. This might also relate to the Persian word "kāšāne," meaning house.

The history of the city began in 1436 as a monastery village. It was part of the Principality of Moldavia at that time. By the start of the 19th century, it was a small town. It had only about 7,000 inhabitants during that period. In 1812, the Russian Empire acquired the eastern half of Moldavia. This territory became known as Bessarabia. Chișinău then became the capital of the new Bessarabian oblast.

The Russian government implemented a development plan to modernize the town. This plan created broad, long roads and divided the city into two areas. One area was the old town with irregular buildings. The other was a newer city center and railway station.

During the Russian Imperial period, the city grew rapidly. The population reached 92,000 by 1862 and 125,787 by 1900. Many Jews moved to the city due to better economic conditions. By 1897, Jewish residents made up 46 percent of the population. This period also saw violent anti-Semitic riots known as pogroms. A major riot occurred in April 1903, resulting in 47 deaths.

Following the Russian Revolution, Bessarabia joined the Kingdom of Romania. By 1919, Chișinău was the second largest city in Romania. During this Romanian period, the city invested in infrastructure and education. The sculptor Alexandru Plămădeală erected the Stephen the Great Monument in 1927.

The Second World War brought immense destruction to the city. In 1940, the Soviet Union annexed Bessarabia. This led to mass deportations of native families to other parts of the USSR. A powerful earthquake also struck on November 10, 1940. It measured between 7.4 and 7.7 on the Richter scale. The quake destroyed many buildings and caused 78 deaths. During the war, the city faced Nazi air raids and heavy fighting.

After the war, Chișinău became part of the Soviet Union again. The city underwent massive reconstruction starting in 1947. Architects like Alexey Shchusev developed plans for the city's growth. The 1950s saw rapid population growth and new housing styles. Stalinist architecture featured large-scale palaces and buildings. Later, Nikita Khrushchev promoted a style that was "good, cheaper, and built faster." This era introduced large blocks of flats that dominate the landscape today.
