The Russian Geographical Society later named it after Ivan Chersky. He was a famous Polish explorer and geographer.
The geology of the range is complex and still being studied. The mountains sit on the boundary of the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. Scientists are researching the exact nature of this boundary. In the 1980s, experts thought the area was a zone of continental rifting. This means the crust was spreading apart. Now, many believe it is an active suture zone. A suture zone is a convergent plate boundary where plates press together. This compression makes the Chersky Range seismically active. The range also contains a geologic triple junction. This is a specific point where the Ulakhan Fault intersects the suture zone. The mountains connect to the Laptev Sea Rift in the north. This rift is a continental extension of the Mid-Arctic Gakkel Ridge. These tectonic forces help shape the high peaks and deep valleys. The movement of the plates is a primary driver of the local landscape.
Climate is another important feature of the Chersky Range. The mountains, along with the Verkhoyansk Range, moderate the Siberian climate. The high ridges act as a physical block for weather patterns. They obstruct air flows that move in from the west. This obstruction decreases the amount of snowfall on the western plains. Because of this, the mountains change the environment for the lands around them.
Beyond geology, the range holds great cultural value. It contains important sites for traditional Yakut culture. These include Ynnakh Mountain, also known as Mat'-Gora. There are also unique kigilyakh rock formations found here. To protect these natural and cultural wonders, the Moma Natural Park was established. This park is located in the southern zone of the range.
