Modern cheerleading routines are very physical and require great skill. Cheerleaders often use pom-poms to add color to their movements.
This tradition began with students in Great Britain in the 1860s. They would chant in unison to support their favorite athletes. This idea moved to the United States soon after. Early organized cheerleading was actually an all-male activity.
As time passed, the sport changed and grew much larger. Women began participating at the University of Minnesota in 1923. During the 1940s, many more women joined during World War II. Lawrence Herkimer helped the sport grow by starting camps in 1949. He also helped create the National Cheerleading Association in 1951. By 1975, about 500,000 students in America were participating. The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders became famous in the 1970s.
Today, cheerleading is a global activity with millions of fans.

Cheerleading is a dynamic activity used to motivate sports teams and entertain audiences.
Modern routines rely on a specific set of technical skills. Cheerleaders perform tumbling, which involves acrobatic floor moves like flips. They also execute jumps, such as the herkie jump. In a herkie, an athlete bends one leg toward the ground while stretching the other out to the side. Dance and synchronized cheers provide the rhythm for the routine.
Cheerleading has a long history that began with simple chants. In the 1860s, students in Great Britain began cheering in unison for athletes. This tradition moved to the United States shortly after. The first recorded intercollegiate football game in America occurred on November 6, 1869. During this game, fans shouted the "Sis Boom Rah!" cheer.
Gender roles in the activity shifted significantly over time. While women were permitted at the University of Minnesota in 1923, many schools still viewed cheerleading as a male occupation through the 1920s. During World War II, the draft of collegiate men created opportunities for women.
Professional cheerleading added a new dimension to the activity. The Baltimore Colts were the first NFL team to have a squad. In the 1970s, the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders gained massive popularity. They were known for sophisticated dance moves and became American icons. By 1975, an estimated 500,000 students participated in cheerleading in America. At that time, approximately 95 percent of participants were female.
Competitive cheerleading grew through media exposure and new organizations. In 1983, ESPN began broadcasting the National High School Cheerleading Competition. This helped transition cheerleading into a modern, stunt-heavy sport.
Today, cheerleading is a global phenomenon with massive participation numbers. The International Cheer Union (ICU) now includes 116 member nations.
