Chanakya saw the boy playing king with other children. He knew Chandragupta could be a great ruler. Chanakya trained the boy for seven years. They built an army to fight the Nanda king. At first, they tried to take the capital city. They failed because they did not win the small villages first.
They learned to win the borders before the center. This helped them win. They took the capital, Pataliputra. Chandragupta became the first Mauryan emperor. Chanakya served as his chief adviser. He also helped the next king, Bindusara.
Chanakya was a very famous wise man from ancient India.
Legends say Chanakya had a very difficult start with the Nanda king. The Nanda king ruled a large empire at that time. In one story, the king was mean to Chanakya at a big meeting. This made Chanakya very angry at the king. He made a vow to destroy the Nanda family. To do this, he had to find a new leader. He searched for a person who was strong and wise. He wanted someone who could replace the old rulers. This was a very big and hard job.
Chanakya eventually found a young boy named Chandragupta. He saw the boy playing a game with other children. In the game, the boy acted like a powerful king. Chanakya saw that the boy had special qualities. He decided to take the boy and teach him. Chanakya trained him for seven whole years. He taught him how to be a great leader. They worked together to prepare for a big change. They wanted to build a new and better empire.
At first, their plan to take power did not work. They tried to attack the center of the empire first. This was a mistake that led to a defeat. They learned a lesson from a woman and her child. The child had eaten the middle of a cake first. The mother said he was being foolish. Chanakya and Chandragupta realized they should win the borders first. They began by taking over the small border villages. Slowly, they moved toward the capital city of Pataliputra. This new way helped them finally win the fight.
After their victory, Chandragupta became the first Mauryan emperor.
Chanakya was a legendary figure in ancient Indian history. He was a Brahmin, which is a specific social group. He is most famous for helping Chandragupta Maurya become the first Mauryan emperor. Chanakya served as a chief adviser and prime minister. He helped both Chandragupta and his son, Bindusara, rule their vast empire. Many people also know him by other names. He is often called Kautilya or Vishnugupta. Some traditions link him to the Arthashastra. This is an ancient book about politics and economics. Most historians believe many authors wrote this book later on. They likely gave it Chanakya's name to make it seem more important.
There is no official historical record of Chanakya's life. Instead, we learn about him through different legendary accounts. These stories come from many different traditions. The Buddhist version is found in the Mahavamsa. This text was written between the fifth and sixth centuries CE. The Jain version is found in the Parishishtaparvan. This was written by Hemachandra in the 12th century CE. There is also a Kashmiri version in the Kathasaritsagara. Finally, there is a Sanskrit play called Mudrarakshasa. Each version tells a slightly different story about his life. However, they all agree that Chanakya wanted to destroy the Nanda kings.

In many stories, Chanakya's journey began with an insult. The Nanda kings ruled before the Mauryan Empire. In the Buddhist legend, Chanakya was a scholar from Takkasila. He was very well-versed in politics and the Vedas. During an alms-giving ceremony, Emperor Dhana Nanda insulted him. The emperor ordered Chanakya to be thrown out of the assembly. This anger led Chanakya to vow to destroy the Nanda dynasty. To do this, he needed to find a worthy leader. He searched for a person who had the strength to rule. He eventually found a young boy named Chandragupta.
Chanakya found Chandragupta while the boy was playing with other children. The boy was acting like an emperor in a game. Chanakya saw that the boy had natural leadership qualities. He decided to take the boy and train him. This training lasted for seven years. Chanakya taught him how to handle imperial duties. To fund their mission, Chanakya used a secret technique. He used alchemy to create wealth. In one version, he turned one gold coin into eight. This allowed him to assemble a large army to challenge the Nanda empire.

Their first attempt to take the empire was a failure. They tried to attack the center of the empire too quickly. This mistake caused their army to face a severe defeat. They learned a lesson from watching a woman and her child. The child was eating a cake by eating the middle first. The mother said this was foolish. She told him to eat the edges first. Chanakya and Chandragupta realized they must conquer the border villages first. They changed their strategy to focus on the edges of the empire. This slow approach eventually led them to the capital, Pataliputra.

Once they reached Pataliputra, they killed Emperor Dhana Nanda. Chandragupta was then named the new emperor. Chanakya remained his most important adviser. He even took steps to protect the emperor from enemies. He began mixing small doses of poison into the emperor's food. This was meant to make Chandragupta immune to poisoning. One legend tells of a difficult moment involving the empress, Durdhara. Chanakya had to make a very sudden and difficult decision to save an unborn child. This child was later named Bindusara. Bindusara's name comes from the word "bindu," meaning drops. This referred to the drops of blood on his body.
Chanakya's influence reached very far. The Tibetan author Taranatha called him a "great lord" to Bindusara. He claimed Chanakya helped Bindusara rule a territory between two seas. These were the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. Chanakya's life shows how a single person can change the course of history. His stories connect politics, leadership, and the rise of great empires. Even if the details are legendary, his impact on Indian history remains massive.
