Some stars in this group are very special. Delta Cephei is a star that changes its size. It grows and shrinks over about five days. This makes it a Cepheid variable. This means it is a star that pulses.
Other stars are much bigger than our Sun. Mu Cephei is a red star. It is so large it could reach past Jupiter. VV Cephei A is also a huge star. It is about 1,050 times larger than the Sun.
There are also deep objects in this area. The Fireworks Galaxy is a spiral galaxy. It has had ten supernovae. A supernova is a massive star explosion. You can also find a very powerful quasar there. It has a black hole at its center. This black hole is very heavy. It is as heavy as 40 billion Suns.

Many stars in this area behave in very interesting ways. The star Delta Cephei is a special kind of star. It is called a Cepheid variable. This means the star pulses by changing its size. It grows and shrinks over a period of 5 days and 9 hours. It stays between 40 and 46 solar diameters in size. John Goodricke discovered this pulsing in 1784. Another star, Gamma Cephei, is a binary star. This means it is made of two stars orbiting each other. It even has a planet called Gamma Cephei Ab.
Some stars in Cepheus are much larger than our own Sun. Mu Cephei is a red supergiant known as the Garnet Star. If it were in our Solar System, it would reach past Jupiter. Another huge star is VV Cephei A. It is about 1,050 times larger than the Sun. 
Deep in space, Cepheus holds some of the most powerful objects known. There is a quasar called S5 0014+81. This quasar has an ultramassive black hole at its core. This black hole is about 40 billion solar masses. That is 10,000 times heavier than the black hole in our Milky Way. You can also find the Fireworks Galaxy, or NGC 6946. This spiral galaxy has seen ten supernovae. This is more than any other galaxy. The nebula NGC 7538 even holds a very large protostar.
Looking at Cepheus helps us see how the universe is built. We can see how stars live and how they change. We can see how huge black holes pull on space. Even the small stars tell a story. For example, Krüger 60 is a pair of red dwarfs. It is only 13 light-years away from Earth. This makes it one of our closest neighbors. These stars and galaxies show us a very busy sky. It is a place full of light and great power.

Cepheus contains several of the largest known stars in the universe. Some of these are classified as red supergiants. Mu Cephei is known as the Garnet Star due to its deep red color. It is a semiregular variable star with a period of about 2 years. If placed at the center of our Solar System, it would likely extend past the orbit of Jupiter. Another massive star is VV Cephei A, located about 5,000 light-years away. This red supergiant is approximately 1,050 times larger than the Sun. It is part of an unusually long-period eclipsing binary system.
Other massive stars in this constellation are candidates for core-collapse supernovae. These are massive stars that may eventually end in huge explosions. V381 Cephei Aa is one such star, with a diameter 980 times that of the Sun. It belongs to a triple star system. Zeta Cephei is another large star, though it is smaller than the others. Its diameter is less than 200 times that of the Sun. If placed at the center of our Solar System, its surface would lie between the orbits of Venus and Earth.
Beyond individual stars, Cepheus hosts incredible deep-sky objects. The constellation is rich in star-forming regions and various emission nebulae. 
There are many galaxies and clusters to explore in this region as well. NGC 6946 is a spiral galaxy nicknamed the Fireworks Galaxy. This name comes from the fact that ten supernovae have been observed there. This is more than in any other galaxy. The nebula NGC 7538 is home to the largest discovered protostar. You can also find NGC 188, which is one of the oldest-known open clusters. It is also the closest open cluster to the north celestial pole. Other nebulae include the Cave Nebula, known as Sh 2-155, and the reflection nebula NGC 7023.
Binary star systems are also very common throughout Cepheus. Gamma Cephei is a binary star consisting of an orange giant and a red dwarf. It hosts an exoplanet named Gamma Cephei Ab. Omicron Cephei is another binary system with a period of 800 years. Xi Cephei is a blue-white and yellow binary with a 4,000-year period. Krüger 60 is a much closer system, located only 13 light-years away. It consists of two red dwarfs. While it was once thought to be a home for the interstellar comet 2I/Borisov, that idea was later rejected. These diverse systems show how complex the stellar environment is in this part of the sky.
