The history of the cenote is deeply tied to the Maya civilization. The word itself comes from the lowland Yucatec Maya language to describe any location with accessible groundwater. Because the Yucatán Peninsula has very few rivers or lakes, cenotes provided the only perennial source of potable water. This necessity shaped where people lived, as major Maya settlements like Chichen Itza were built near these natural wells. The Maya also viewed cenotes through a spiritual lens. They believed these pits were portals to Xibalba, the afterlife, and the home of the rain god, Chaac. Consequently, they used some cenotes for ceremonial offerings, including artifacts and human remains.

The depth of this halocline depends on many factors, including climate, how much rain recharges the aquifer, and the distance from the coast. Generally, the halocline is found deeper the further one moves from the shore.
Today, cenotes are significant sites for both ecology and recreation. They host unique flora and fauna, including fish like mojarras, guppies, and catfish. In the darkest, most secluded areas, some animals have evolved to be blind or lack pigmentation, using long feelers to navigate.
