The way a cenote works begins with water and rock. Rainwater filters slowly through the ground into the limestone. This water dissolves the rock and creates empty spaces underground. As these spaces grow, the rock ceiling becomes weak. Eventually, the ceiling collapses into the void below. This can create a circular pond with steep walls.

In some cases, a cenote might only be accessible through tiny holes less than one meter wide created by tree roots.

In the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico alone, there are an estimated 6,000 to 10,000 of these geological features.

The formation of a cenote is a slow process of dissolution and structural failure. It begins when rainwater filters through the ground and reaches the limestone bedrock. This water dissolves the rock, creating subsurface voids or empty spaces. As the rock continues to dissolve, it creates more room for blocks of stone to fall. This process of collapse can be influenced by the water table. When the water level is below the ceiling of a void, the rock is no longer supported by buoyancy. This lack of support can increase the rate of structural collapse. A cenote may be fully collapsed into an open pond or only partially collapsed, leaving a rock overhang above the water.

Geologists use different terms to classify these features based on their shape, or morphometry. In 1936, a classification system was created to group them. Cenotes-cántaro, or jug cenotes, have a surface opening that is narrower than the water body below. Cenotes-cilíndricos are cylinder cenotes with strictly vertical walls. Cenotes-aguadas are basin cenotes that feature shallow water basins. Finally, grutas are cave cenotes that have a horizontal entrance and include dry sections. While these names describe the shape, they do not fully capture the complex flooded cave networks discovered by divers in the 1980s.

The history of the cenote is deeply tied to the Maya civilization. The word itself comes from the lowland Yucatec Maya language to describe any location with accessible groundwater. Because the Yucatán Peninsula has very few rivers or lakes, cenotes provided the only perennial source of potable water. This necessity shaped where people lived, as major Maya settlements like Chichen Itza were built near these natural wells. The Maya also viewed cenotes through a spiritual lens. They believed these pits were portals to Xibalba, the afterlife, and the home of the rain god, Chaac. Consequently, they used some cenotes for ceremonial offerings, including artifacts and human remains.

The depth of this halocline depends on many factors, including climate, how much rain recharges the aquifer, and the distance from the coast. Generally, the halocline is found deeper the further one moves from the shore.

Today, cenotes are significant sites for both ecology and recreation. They host unique flora and fauna, including fish like mojarras, guppies, and catfish. In the darkest, most secluded areas, some animals have evolved to be blind or lack pigmentation, using long feelers to navigate.

They also attract specialized scuba divers. Cavern divers stay where natural light is visible, while cave divers use special training and equipment to explore deep, dark systems. These divers must manage freshwater buoyancy and navigate through the visual distortions of the halocline. Protecting these fragile ecosystems is a major priority for researchers and conservationists alike.
