Although she was a princess, her family had very little money. She received a standard education for German royalty, focusing on etiquette and French. She was also known as a tomboy who trained herself to use a sword. To improve her family's status, she was groomed for a powerful marriage. This led to her being chosen as the wife of the future Peter III of Russia.

In 1745, she married Peter III and moved to Russia.

She worked very hard to fit into Russian society. She studied the Russian language late into the night. She also converted to Eastern Orthodox Christianity to show her devotion. During this time, she survived a dangerous bout of pneumonia. She later became a very avid reader of French Enlightenment philosophers. These books changed how she thought about power and politics.

Catherine took power in 1762 through a coup d'etat against her husband. Her rule relied on several key people to maintain control. She used noble favorites, such as Count Grigory Orlov and Grigory Potemkin, for support. She also relied on successful military leaders to expand her borders. Generals like Alexander Suvorov and Pyotr Rumyantsev led her armies. Admirals like Samuel Greig and Fyodor Ushakov commanded her navy. These leaders helped the Russian Empire grow rapidly through conquest and diplomacy.

In the east, Russians became the first Europeans to colonize Alaska.

To manage these new lands, Catherine ordered the building of many towns. Cities like Yekaterinoslav, Kherson, Nikolayev, and Sevastopol were founded on her orders. She also promoted Western European culture within Russia. One major achievement was the Smolny Institute of Noble Maidens.

This was the first state-financed higher education institution for women in Europe. She is often described as an enlightened despot because of these reforms.

However, Catherine's reign also faced serious internal challenges. While the nobility gained more freedom, the lives of the poor became harder. The economy still relied heavily on serfdom, which is a system of forced labor. The demands of the state and landowners increased the exploitation of these serfs. This inequality led to violent uprisings, such as Pugachev's Rebellion. This rebellion involved Cossacks, nomads, and peasants fighting against the state. Despite these conflicts, her influence shaped the future of the Russian Empire.
