Cartilage is a smooth and tough tissue. 

There are three main types of cartilage. 
Tiny cells called chondrocytes make up cartilage. These cells make a special mix called a matrix. This matrix holds water to help with impacts. Cartilage does not have blood vessels or nerves. This means it cannot feel pain. Because it lacks blood, it heals very slowly. It can take a long time to fix itself after an injury.

These layers contain mineral deposits like hydroxyapatite. Near the joint surface, the superficial zone provides lubrication. This zone is rich in proteoglycans to soften impacts.
Because cartilage lacks blood vessels and nerves, it is insensitive. This means it does not feel pain directly. Nutrition for the chondrocytes must arrive through a process called diffusion. When you move, the compression of the cartilage generates fluid flow. This flow helps move nutrients to the cells. However, cartilage has a very slow turnover rate. It also repairs at a very slow rate compared to other tissues. This is because chondrocytes are trapped in small spaces called lacunae. They cannot migrate to a site of injury to help repair it.
Understanding cartilage is important for medical science. Aging can cause the collagen fibers to become more crosslinked. This makes the tissue stiffer and more prone to failure. Osteoarthritis is a condition where cartilage can wear down completely. This leads to direct bone-to-bone contact. Scientists use tests like confined compression to study these properties. They measure the aggregate modulus, which is the stiffness at equilibrium. They also measure permeability, which is the resistance to fluid flow. These studies help improve joint implants and repair procedures.
