Long ago, the Dimetrodon was a famous land predator with serrated teeth. These teeth helped it eat prey that was much larger than itself. Even the famous Tyrannosaurus rex was likely an obligate carnivore.

Today, we see many different kinds of meat-eaters in our world. We can group them by what they eat. Insectivores eat mainly insects. Piscivores eat mainly fish. Some carnivores are called apex predators. This means they are at the very top of the food chain. They are not usually hunted by other animals. You can see this in big cats like lions. A lion is a powerful predator that lives in the wild.

Scientists categorize carnivores based on how much meat they consume. A hypercarnivore is an animal whose diet consists of more than 70% meat. Mesocarnivores fall into the middle range, with meat making up 30% to 70% of their diet. Hypocarnivores are those that eat less than 30% meat, relying more on plants or fungi. We can also classify them by the specific type of prey they target. For example, insectivores eat mainly insects, vermivores eat soft-bodied invertebrates, and piscivores specialize in eating fish. These distinctions help biologists understand how different species occupy unique roles in nature.

Some animals are classified as obligate carnivores, often called "true" carnivores. These organisms require nutrients that are found only in animal flesh to survive in the wild. For instance, all wild felids, including domestic cats, are obligate carnivores. Their metabolisms cannot synthesize essential nutrients like taurine, arginine, retinol, or arachidonic acid. While they might eat small amounts of plants, they lack the physiology to digest them fully. Some obligate carnivores will even eat vegetation as an emetic to induce vomiting. In contrast, facultative carnivores or omnivores can survive on both animal and non-animal food sources.

Carnivores have evolved specific physical traits to assist in capturing and processing food. Many hunters possess great strength, speed, and keen senses to track their prey. They often have specialized teeth and claws designed for tearing meat. Mammalian predators frequently have eyes positioned on the front of their heads. On land, the sphenacodontoid synapsid Dimetrodon developed serrated teeth to eat large prey. During the Mesozoic era, theropod dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex are thought to have been obligate carnivores. Even as dinosaurs ruled, small mammals like Repenomamus were capable of attacking them.

In the modern Cenozoic era, mammals have largely become the dominant predators. Many of these mammals, such as dogs, share dental adaptations like carnassial teeth and long canines. This specialized tooth structure is essential for efficient meat consumption. Some carnivores reach the very top of the food chain, where they are known as apex predators. An apex predator is an adult that is not typically preyed upon by other animals.
