When we get raw wool or cotton, it is often messy. It has clumps and bits of plant matter in it. Carding cleans these fibres and makes them straight.

Most carding tools use card clothing. This is a flexible material with many tiny metal pins. These pins help untangle the fibres. The pins also line them up so they are parallel. This means they all point in the same direction.

The way carding works involves passing fibres between moving surfaces. These surfaces are covered in card clothing. Card clothing is a sturdy, flexible material with many small metal pins embedded in it.

As the surfaces move, the pins break up clumps and unorganized locks of fibre. The pins then align the individual fibres so they are parallel to each other. In a drum carder, a small roller called a licker-in moves the fibre onto a larger drum. The relative speeds of the rollers pull the fibres straight. This process turns the messy material into an orderly mass called a batt.

Humans have used different tools for carding for a very long time. The word itself comes from the Latin word for a thistle or teasel. Long ago, people used dried vegetable teasels to comb raw wool.

In India, early evidence from the 2nd century CE shows the use of bow-instruments. These tools were called kaman and dhunaki. They used a vibrating string to loosen the texture of the fibre. Later, machines were developed to make this work much faster for large amounts of cloth.

Many inventors helped create the machines we recognize today. In 1748, Lewis Paul of Birmingham, England, invented two hand-driven carding machines. Later, Richard Arkwright and Samuel Crompton improved these designs. By the 1780s, carding machines were common in mills in northern England and mid-Wales.

In 1834, James Walton invented the first practical machines to use a wire card. This became the standard for the industry. By 1893, a place called the Spen Valley was known as the card clothing capital of the world.

Other machines are huge and can take up an entire room. Large machines often use many drums to process the fibre. Even today, many carders in woollen mills look very similar to machines from 20 or 50 years ago. Whether done by a large machine or by hand, carding is the essential bridge between raw fluff and beautiful thread.

This region contained at least 11 card clothing factories by 1838. Even as industries changed, some companies maintained long histories. For example, Garnett Wire Ltd. dates back to 1851, and Joseph Sellers & Son Ltd. was established in 1840. In North America, the town of Leicester, Massachusetts, became a major center. By the 1890s, it produced one-third of all hand and machine cards in the region.

Carding is just one stage in a complex sequence of textile preparation. In cotton manufacturing, it is often part of a four-step process including willowing, lapping, carding, and drawing.

Willowing loosens the fibres, while lapping removes dust to create a flat sheet. After carding creates a sliver, the drawing process combines multiple slivers into one. This increases the quality and consistency of the material. Repeated drawing allows for finer counts to be spun. Eventually, these fibres are turned into rovings, which are thin enough to be used in the final spinning process.
