Human history at the cape began with exploration. An English explorer named John Davis arrived at this location in 1587. He named the headland after his friend, John Chidley. This was a time when the Dominion of Newfoundland was a separate country. This history shaped how the borders on Killiniq Island were eventually set. The cape marks the south end of the entrance to the Hudson Strait. This water path sits directly opposite Resolution Island.

In the 20th century, the area became important for science and defense. On October 22, 1943, workers landed just south of the cape. They established Weather Station Kurt to collect important weather data. Later, the area was considered for the Pinetree Line. The Pinetree Line was a series of radar stations. These stations were placed along the 50th parallel north. The government originally planned a long-range radar station called "N-30" at Cape Chidley.

Plans for the N-30 station involved significant movement of supplies. Ships carried materials to the site during 1951 and 1952. However, the plans for the station changed. Between late 1952 and early 1953, the site was moved to Resolution Island. This shows how military and scientific locations can shift over time. The area also saw human settlement nearby. The community of Port Burwell in Nunavut was once the closest community to the cape. However, Port Burwell was evacuated in 1978.
