Most canyons form over a very long time. This happens through erosion. Erosion is when wind or water wears away rock.

Rivers are a main way canyons form. The water flows over rock layers. It carries bits of rock downstream. This wears down the ground. Canyons often form where soft rock meets hard rock. The soft rock wears away easily. The hard rock stays to make steep cliffs.

Water can also break rocks in a way called frost wedging. Water seeps into cracks. Then the water freezes into ice. The ice pushes the rocks apart. Large chunks break off the walls.

A canyon is a deep cleft between cliffs. These amazing features form through weathering and erosion over very long periods. Erosion is the way nature wears away rock. Rivers play a huge role in this work. They have a natural tendency to cut through surfaces. As rivers move, they carry away rock pieces called sediment. This process slowly wears down different layers of rock.

How does a canyon actually work? It often starts when a river flows from a high place to a low place. The river tries to reach a baseline elevation. This is the same level as the water it flows into. As the water moves, it wears away rock layers. This works best when soft rock layers sit next to hard rock layers. The soft rock wears away quickly. The hard rock stays behind to form steep cliffs.

In Tibet, the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon is very deep. Some people think it is the deepest on Earth. The Capertee Valley in Australia is actually the widest. It is 1 km wider than the Grand Canyon.

Different places use different names for these features. In North America, people say canyon. In Europe, they often say gorge or ravine.

A canyon is a deep cleft or split between escarpments and cliffs. These massive geological features form through weathering and the erosive activity of rivers over geologic time scales. Erosion is the process where natural forces wear away rock and soil. Rivers are primary drivers of this change. They naturally tend to cut through underlying surfaces. As they flow, they carry away sediments, which are particles of rock and soil, and move them downstream.

The mechanism of canyon formation relies on changes in elevation. A river bed gradually tries to reach a baseline elevation. This is the same elevation as the body of water into which the river drains. Canyons form when a river's headwaters and its estuary are at significantly different elevations. This process is most effective in regions where soft rock layers are intermingled with harder, more resistant layers. The softer rocks wear away more quickly, while the harder rocks remain to form steep cliffs.

Various physical processes contribute to the shaping of canyon walls. In arid zones, physical weathering has a more localized effect than in wet areas. Wind and water work together to erode less resistant materials, such as shales. Another important process is frost wedging. This occurs when water seeps into cracks between rocks and then freezes. Because water expands when it freezes, it pushes the rocks apart. Eventually, large chunks of rock break off the canyon walls.

Canyons can be categorized into several distinct types based on their shape and location. A box canyon is a small canyon that is shorter and narrower than a river canyon. It features steep walls on three sides, meaning access is only possible through the mouth. Slot canyons are characterized by being very narrow with smooth walls. In the ocean, steep-sided valleys in the seabed are called submarine canyons. These are thought to be formed by landslides and turbidity currents rather than surface rivers.

Geological shifts can also create canyons through tectonic uplift. This happens when large rivers run through canyons because the land has gradually risen. These are known as entrenched rivers because they cannot easily change their course. The Colorado River in the American Southwest and the Snake River in the Northwest are examples of this. Additionally, canyons can form in limestone areas. Since limestone is soluble, cave systems often form within the rock. When these cave systems collapse, a canyon is left behind.

Defining the "largest" canyon is difficult because it depends on the measurement used. A canyon might be large due to its depth, its length, or its total area. For example, the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon in Tibet is considered by some to be the deepest on Earth. The Grand Canyon in Arizona is one of the world's largest, with an average depth of 1,600 meters and a massive volume. Canyons hold great significance for both history and culture. In Africa's Olduvai Gorge, evidence of archaic humans has been discovered. In the southwestern United States, canyons are important for archaeology. Ancient Pueblo people built many cliff-dwellings in these areas. Even the names we use for these features vary by region. In North America, the word "canyon" is common. In Europe and Oceania, people often use the words "gorge" or "ravine."
