A fire-lance was a short-ranged weapon that combined a gunpowder tube with a polearm. These early tubes were made of bamboo or paper before metal became common. In Europe, early weapons were often small and shot arrows. These were known by names such as ribaldis or handgonnes.

By the end of the 14th century, these smaller pieces gave way to massive bombards. These larger guns were specifically designed to breach thick stone walls during sieges.

The history of the cannon begins in East Asia during the Song dynasty. The earliest known depiction is a sculpture from the Dazu Rock Carvings in China, dated to 1128. However, solid archaeological evidence does not appear until the 13th century. One of the most important artifacts is the Xanadu Gun from 1298. This is the earliest extant cannon to feature an inscription with a production date.

Other notable pieces include the "thousand ball thunder cannon" from the Huolongjing. In the 16th century, the Ming army used thousands of cannons during the siege of Suzhou in 1366. During the Japanese invasions of Korea, the Ming-Joseon coalition used artillery extensively in both land and naval battles. Some of these weapons were even mounted on the turtle ships of Yi Sun-sin. In 1619, the city of Beijing was armed with large cannons using balls weighing more than 100 pounds.

Today, the terminology surrounding these weapons has shifted. The word "cannon" has fallen into decline in many modern contexts. It is often replaced by more specific terms like howitzer, mortar, or simply "artillery." However, the term survives in the name "autocannon." An autocannon is a high-caliber automatic weapon that fires larger rounds than a standard machine gun.
