Cancún is a major city in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo.

The city was built as a special project by the government. They wanted to create a new place for people to vacation. In 1970, the area was very different than it is now. There were only three people living on the island back then. They were caretakers for a coconut plantation owned by José de Jesús Lima Gutiérrez. The Mexican government gave 2 million dollars to start this project. They used an agency called INFRATUR to help plan everything.
Long ago, the Maya people lived in this region. The name Cancún likely comes from the Mayan language. Some say it means "nest of snakes." Other people think it means "place of the golden snake."
The weather in Cancún is tropical and very warm. It stays hot throughout the entire year. There is a rainy season from August to November. The dry season happens from November to April.
Cancún has grown much faster than other nearby towns. In the decade between 1970 and 1980, the population grew very quickly. Today, many people move here from other states in Mexico. People also arrive from Europe and the rest of the Americas. In 2023, a record 21 million tourists visited the city.
Cancún is a major city in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo.

The name Cancún has deep roots in the Mayan language. Early Spanish sources suggest the original island was known as a 'promontory' or 'point of grass.' The modern name likely comes from the Mayan words for 'snake' and 'to swell.' This leads to translations like 'nest of snakes' or 'place of the golden snake.' Snake iconography was common at the nearby pre-Columbian site of Nizuc. The municipal shield designed by Joe Vera reflects this environment. It uses blue for the sea, yellow for the sand, and red for the sun.
Cancún is a planned city created specifically to foster tourism. In 1970, the area was nearly empty. Isla Cancún had only three residents who cared for a coconut plantation. Nearby Puerto Juárez was a small fishing village with 117 people. To build a resort, the Mexican government allocated $2 million in 1967. This fund was managed by the Bank of Mexico through an agency called INFRATUR. This agency later became FONATUR, the National Fund for Tourism Development. The government financed the first nine hotels because investors were hesitant.
The city's growth has been incredibly rapid. Between 1970 and 1980, the population grew by 62.3% annually on average. This growth outpaced the rest of the state of Quintana Roo. While the south focused on the timber industry, the north focused on tourism. The city has transformed from a fisherman's island into a global resort. In 2023, a record 21 million tourists visited the area. This exceeded the original estimate of 20.5 million visitors.
The geography of the city includes a specific layout. The Hotel Zone juts into the Caribbean Sea. This area is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System. The mainland residential section, known as El Centro, follows a master plan. This plan uses 'supermanzanas,' which are giant trapezoidal superblocks. These blocks feature central open areas and U-shaped residential streets. However, modern development has become more scattered across the mainland.
Cancún has a tropical wet and dry climate, known as Köppen Aw. It is hot year-round with an annual mean temperature of 80.6°F. The sea breezes keep afternoon temperatures moderate. There are pronounced rainy and dry seasons. The rainy season runs from late August through November. The dry season lasts from November through April. The hurricane season occurs from June through November.
Severe weather is a significant factor for the region. Cancún is located in a main Caribbean hurricane impact area. Hurricane Gilbert hit in 1988 and was a devastating direct hit. This storm caused an estimated $87 million loss in tourism by late 1988. In 2005, Hurricane Wilma struck as a Category 4 storm. Its eye passed just west of Cancún. Hurricane Dean also made its mark in 2007. Authorities must often prepare for these intense tropical storms.
Modern Cancún faces several complex challenges. The city struggles to provide public services for the massive influx of people. In 2006, irregular developments occupied about 10% to 15% of the mainland fringes. Since 2015, large amounts of Sargassum seaweed have impacted the beaches. This brown seaweed appears every summer and can be smelly. Additionally, the city has dealt with issues regarding public safety and drug trafficking. These challenges exist alongside the city's status as a world-class destination.
