It lived a long time ago. This was during the Late Jurassic period. That was about 155 to 145 million years ago. It lived in what is now the United States.

This dinosaur had a very long neck and tail. It walked on four legs. Its head was tall and boxy. This is different from the low heads of Diplodocus. Camarasaurus had spoon-shaped teeth. These teeth had sharp edges for cutting. It had 13 to 14 teeth in its top jaw. It had 13 teeth in its bottom jaw. These teeth grew back very fast.

Its name means "chambered lizard." This refers to pleurocoels. These are hollow spaces in its neck bones.

One kind, Camarasaurus supremus, was very heavy. It weighed about 42.3 tonnes. It lived with other dinosaurs like Stegosaurus and Allosaurus.

This dinosaur is very important to science. It is one of the best understood dinosaurs in the world. We know a lot about its body and how it lived. This is because hundreds of specimens have been found by researchers.

This dinosaur had a very specific way of eating.

It was a medium browser, which means it ate plants at a middle height. Its skull was tall and boxy. This shape helped it have a stronger bite than some other long-necked dinosaurs. It had spoon-shaped teeth with sharp edges for cutting.

There were 13 to 14 teeth in the upper jaw. There were 13 teeth in the lower jaw. These teeth were replaced very quickly as they wore down.

Scientists first found these fossils in the spring of 1877.

A man named Oramel William Lucas found them in Colorado. He sent the bones to a paleontologist named Edward Drinker Cope. Cope named the dinosaur Camarasaurus supremus. The name means "chambered lizard." This refers to pleurocoels, which are hollow chambers in the neck bones.

Cope named it during a time called the Bone Wars. This was a big competition between him and Othniel Charles Marsh.

There are several different types of Camarasaurus.

One type is Camarasaurus supremus. It was a huge animal that weighed about 42.3 tonnes. Another type was Camarasaurus lentus. This one was much smaller.

There is also a type called Camarasaurus grandis. During the Bone Wars, Marsh named some of these as Morosaurus. Later, scientists realized they were actually Camarasaurus. Many fossils from Garden Park, Colorado, helped scientists figure this out.

Camarasaurus lived in a world full of other famous dinosaurs.

It shared its home with Stegosaurus and Allosaurus. It also lived near the huge Brachiosaurus. Even though it was big, it had its own special way to live. By eating different plants, it did not have to fight for food with other long-necked dinosaurs. This is called niche partitioning. It helped many different kinds of dinosaurs live in the same place at once.

Camarasaurus was a genus of sauropod dinosaur that lived during the Late Jurassic period.

Camarasaurs1.jpg

Most of its fossils come from the Morrison Formation in the United States. These remains date to the Kimmeridgian and Tithonian ages, between 155 and 145 million years ago. Camarasaurus is considered one of the best-understood dinosaurs in the world. This is because hundreds of specimens have been excavated by researchers. These finds include several nearly complete skeletons that allow for detailed study. Scientists have used these fossils to understand its anatomy, biology, and how it lived in its environment.

The name Camarasaurus means "chambered lizard." This name refers to specialized structures in its neck bones called pleurocoels. These are hollow, vaulted chambers found within the cervical vertebrae.

Like other sauropods, Camarasaurus was a quadrupedal animal. This means it walked on all four legs. It possessed a large body, a long neck, and a long tail. Its skull was quite different from other long-necked dinosaurs like Diplodocus. While those animals had low skulls, Camarasaurus had a large, tall, and boxy skull. It also featured a very large naris, which is a nasal opening.

Camarasaurus had a very specialized way of eating. It was a selective feeder and a medium browser. This means it ate plants at a middle height. Its robust jaws allowed for a much stronger bite than many other sauropods.

This strength helped it process different types of vegetation. Its teeth were unique because they were spoon-shaped. These teeth featured continuous cutting edges to help with feeding.

The animal had 13 to 14 teeth in its upper jaws and 13 teeth in its lower jaws. These teeth were replaced rapidly as they wore down from use.

There are at least three recognized species within this genus. The type species is Camarasaurus supremus. It was a medium-large sauropod that weighed approximately 42.3 tonnes.

Another species, Camarasaurus grandis, is also well-known. The third species is Camarasaurus lentus, which was much smaller in size. Some researchers have even suggested that Camarasaurus lewisi belongs in a different genus called Cathetosaurus.

These different species allowed the group to be very successful in various environments.

The history of Camarasaurus is tied to the "Bone Wars." This was a famous scientific rivalry between paleontologists Edward Drinker Cope and Othniel Charles Marsh.

In 1877, a school superintendent named Oramel William Lucas discovered fossils in Garden Park, Colorado. He sent these fossils to Cope, who named the first species Camarasaurus supremus. Because of the intense competition between Cope and Marsh, many descriptions were rushed. Marsh often assigned many species to his own genus, Morosaurus.

However, later research showed that species like M. lentus and M. grandis were actually Camarasaurus.

In 1877, John A. Ryder created the first skeletal reconstruction of a sauropod. This was a natural-sized model of Camarasaurus supremus.

OsbornMook1921-plate-LXXXII-ryder-camarasaurus.jpg
Because the scientists only had skull fragments at the time, the reconstruction was somewhat hypothetical. The original model even gave the dinosaur carnivorous teeth. Over time, as more complete fossils were found, our understanding of its true appearance improved. This progress shows how much scientific knowledge changes as new evidence is discovered.

Camarasaurus lived alongside many other famous dinosaurs in the Morrison Formation. It shared its habitat with Stegosaurus, Allosaurus, and the massive Brachiosaurus.

Even though many large sauropods lived together, they did not all compete for the same food. This is a concept called niche partitioning. Because Camarasaurus had a different bite and feeding height, it could eat different plants. This allowed many different types of large dinosaurs to live in the same area at the same time.
