We can learn about these insects from very old fossils. Some caddisfly fossils are found in rocks from the Triassic period. This was about 230 million years ago.

Inside the water, larvae use silk to build complex structures. They produce this silk from salivary glands located near their mouths. One major group, the suborder Integripalpia, builds portable cases. These larvae are called polypods because they have extra prolegs on their abdomens. They use silk to glue together sand, gravel, twigs, or shells into a tube. As the larva grows, it adds new material to the front of the case. They can even trim the back end so it does not drag on the ground.

Other larvae use different survival strategies based on their suborder. Members of the suborder Annulipalpia build fixed retreats instead of portable homes. These larvae are campodeiform, meaning they are free-living with long legs and flat bodies. Some build simple tubes anchored to the bottom to catch silt. Others, like the Polycentropodidae, build complex silk structures in rock hollows. These carnivorous larvae act like spiders by rushing out to attack small prey.
