History has brought many changes to the city over hundreds of years. In 1521, explorers arrived during the time of Ferdinand Magellan.

In more recent times, Butuan earned a new nickname. From the late 1940s to the 1970s, it was called the "Timber City of the South."
The land in Butuan is very diverse and useful. Much of the area is used for farming or growing trees.

Butuan is a highly urbanized city in the Philippines.

The city is located in the northeastern Agusan Valley on Mindanao. It sprawls across the Agusan River. To the northwest, the city reaches Butuan Bay. This bay eventually joins the Bohol Sea. The city is bordered by several other areas. Agusan del Norte surrounds it to the north, west, and south. To the east lies Agusan del Sur.
Long ago, Butuan was a powerful precolonial city-state. It was ruled by a leader known as a rajah. This was an Indianized kingdom with advanced technology. The people were famous for their metallurgic industry and naval skills.

Diplomacy was very important for the ancient rajahnate. A king named Kiling sent a mission to the Chinese imperial court. Initially, the court denied his request for equal status. However, under the reign of Sri Bata Shaja, diplomatic equality was eventually granted. This allowed relations to reach a peak during the Yuan dynasty. Evidence of this wealth remains in the form of gold artifacts. A village in Libertad once specialized in gold production.
History changed significantly during the colonial period. In 1521, Ferdinand Magellan's fleet arrived near the area. A mass was celebrated by the chaplain Friar Pedro Valderrama. This event is linked to the birth of Christianity in the Philippines. There is a historical controversy regarding the exact location of this mass. Some say it was in Limasawa, while others suggest Masao in Butuan. Later, the Spanish incorporated Butuan into the Caraga Region. The Spanish fortified the area with many soldiers from Mexico in the 1600s.
The 20th century brought both growth and great hardship. In 1902, the city held its first municipal election under American occupation. During World War II, the city suffered under Japanese occupation. Local people faced terrible violence in established "comfort stations." In 1943, the Battle of Butuan occurred when guerrilla forces attacked. This battle resulted in much of the city being burned. In 1948, a large fire ruined the entire municipality. Despite these struggles, the city grew into a major economic center. From the 1940s to the 1970s, it was known as the "Timber City of the South."
Today, the land use in Butuan is quite diverse. Agriculture covers 397.23 square kilometers of the city. Forestland makes up another 268 square kilometers. This forest is divided into production and protection areas. Production forests are used for industrial tree species. Protection forests, like the Taguibo watershed, maintain the ecological balance.
