Radiation burns can include sunburns caused by ultraviolet light from the sun. Thermal burns are the most common type. These are caused by contact with fire, hot solids, or hot fluids. When a person is burned by hot liquids or gases, it is specifically called scalding.

Most burns happen within homes or workplaces. In many homes, the kitchen is a primary site of risk due to stoves and flames. In workplaces, risks often involve fire, chemicals, or electricity.

To understand how a burn works, we must look at what happens to cells. When temperatures rise above 60 degrees Celsius, proteins begin to lose their three-dimensional shape. This process causes the proteins to break down, leading to tissue damage.

This damage disrupts the skin's ability to perform vital functions. The skin normally protects us from bacteria and regulates body temperature. It also prevents the evaporation of our body's water. When these functions fail, a person may experience infection or hypothermia. Large burns can also cause hypovolemic shock. This happens because water evaporates away or leaks from the capillaries.

Medical professionals classify burns into different stages based on their depth. A superficial or first-degree burn affects only the outermost skin layers. These appear red and dry without blisters, and the pain usually lasts about three days.

A partial-thickness or second-degree burn extends into the underlying skin layers. These often produce painful blisters and can take up to eight weeks to heal. If the injury reaches the deep dermis, it may appear yellow or white. A full-thickness or third-degree burn extends through all layers of the skin. These areas may look white or brown and feel stiff or leathery. Interestingly, these burns are often painless because the nerves are damaged.

Some injuries are even more severe than a third-degree burn. A fourth-degree burn extends through the entire skin into deeper tissues. This includes damage to muscle, tendons, or even bone.
