Spanish colonization began in the 16th century when Pedro de Mendoza founded Santa María del Buen Ayre in 1536. The settlement was later re-founded by Juan de Garay in 1580. For many years, the economy relied on the port of Buenos Aires. This port allowed for the export of meat and leather. Following independence from Spain in 1816, the province faced many civil wars. It even declared itself the independent State of Buenos Aires in 1852.
