In one experiment, he used three counters separated by lead blocks. In another, he arranged them in a triangle to see if particles could travel in a straight line. He discovered that some cosmic rays interact with lead to create many secondary particles. By measuring the rate of these events against the thickness of lead, he created the Rossi curve. This curve showed a rapid rise in particle events followed by a slow decline. His work proved that cosmic rays have a "soft" component that produces many particles and a "hard" component that can pass through thick lead.

In 1933, Rossi conducted a major expedition to Asmara, Eritrea, to study the east-west effect. He chose this location because the effect is more prominent near the equator, which sits at 15° N latitude. He used a device called a cosmic ray telescope, which consisted of two separated Geiger counters. By pointing the telescope in different directions, he measured the intensity of incoming particles. Rossi found that the intensity from the West was significantly larger than from the East. This was a major discovery because it suggested that the primary particles had a positive charge. At the time, many scientists incorrectly assumed these particles were negative electrons.

Rossi's life was shaped by the political shifts in Europe. He was born into a Jewish family in Venice, Italy, in 1905.
