Brontotheriidae, also known as Titanotheriidae, is a family of extinct mammals. They belonged to the order Perissodactyla, which includes modern horses, rhinoceroses, and tapirs. These animals lived during the Eocene epoch, a time characterized by warm and humid climates. Brontotheres were among the first mammals to evolve massive body sizes. The evolution of brontotheres involved a dramatic increase in size. Early stem-brontotheres, such as Eotitanops and Palaeosyops, were relatively small. These early forms were no more than one meter tall. They were likely the size of modern tapirs and lacked horns. Over time, the group evolved much larger bodies. Some species reached heights of over 2.5 meters. Large individuals of the genus Megacerops could weigh over one tonne. Some may have even exceeded that mass.

Many brontotheres possessed unique bony structures on their snouts. Unlike the keratin horns of modern rhinoceroses, these were outgrowths of the skull bone. These horns formed at the transition from the frontal bone to the nasal bone. In many species, they appeared as paired horns located above the eye sockets. In the genus Megacerops, these horns were sexually dimorphic. This means males and females had different horn sizes. Males likely used these horns for head-clashing to compete for mates.

Different genera developed very different head shapes and horn types. The Asian species Embolotherium evolved a single, elongated bony process. This structure acted like a battering ram and was incorporated into the soft tissue of the face. This species may have used its large nasal cavity to make vocalizations. Other genera, such as Dolichorhinus, evolved highly elongated skulls. In some Asian species, the horns were so close together that they became fused.

The diet of the brontothere was highly specialized. They were folivores, meaning they primarily ate foliage. Their teeth were adapted to shearing and cutting nonabrasive vegetation. Their molars featured a bunoselodont pattern, which means they had crescent-shaped enamel cusps. A specific feature called an ectoloph, or a W-shaped shearing blade, connected the main cusps. This structure helped them grind plant material. Microscopic analysis of tooth wear shows they were very selective foragers.

Brontothere fossils are found across a wide Holarctic distribution. They were found in North America and Asia, with some remains in Eastern Europe. The first fossils were discovered in South Dakota.
