Most of these plants are native to the tropical Americas. However, one species, Pitcairnia feliciana, is found in tropical West Africa. Bromeliads belong to the order Poales. They are unique within this order because they possess septal nectaries and inferior ovaries. These anatomical features are especially characteristic of the Bromelioideae subfamily. 
Bromeliads have developed several ways to survive in very different environments. Many species are epiphytes, meaning they grow on other plants rather than in soil. Others are terrestrial, growing directly in the ground. Some species are even aerophytes, which have very reduced root systems. These aerophytes, such as Spanish moss, absorb water directly from the air. Many bromeliads also form vase-shaped rosettes with tightly overlapping leaf bases. By using CAM photosynthesis, bromeliads can open their stomata at night instead. This adaptation helps them conserve moisture in arid environments. The biological diversity of the family is reflected in its many subfamilies. Scientists currently divide the family into eight distinct subfamilies. These include Brocchinioideae, Lindmanioideae, Tillandsioideae, Hechtioideae, Navioideae, Pitcairnioideae, Puyoideae, and Bromelioideae. Originally, scientists classified them based on seed shapes. They grouped them into Bromelioideae, Tillandsioideae, and Pitcairnioideae. Modern molecular studies using chloroplast DNA have changed this. We now know that the traditional Pitcairnioideae is paraphyletic. This means it must be split into several other subfamilies to reflect true evolutionary relationships.
The evolutionary history of bromeliads began approximately 100 million years ago. They are thought to have originated in the tepuis of the Guiana Shield. While they appeared long ago, the family did not diverge into its current subfamilies until 19 million years ago. This long gap suggests many species lived and went extinct during that time. One major driver of diversity was the uplift of the Andes mountains. This geological event occurred between 14.2 and 8.7 million years ago. The rising mountains changed the climate and created new habitats. This rapid change drove the speciation of the Tillandsioideae subfamily and their pollinators, such as hummingbirds.
Bromeliads play a vital role in their ecosystems by creating tiny habitats called phytotelmata. The water held in their leaf tanks can support entire biotic communities.
