The river begins its long journey in a high place. It starts near Mount Kailash in the Tibet region. The water comes from the Angsi Glacier. From there, the river flows east through Tibet. It passes by the capital city of Lhasa. Eventually, the river cuts through the huge Himalayan mountains. It moves through very deep and narrow canyons. One of these is the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon. After the mountains, the river turns south and enters India.

As the river moves into India, it changes a lot. It enters the state of Arunachal Pradesh. There, it is called the Siang or Dihang River.

The river carries many different names in different languages. In Tibet, it is called the Yarlung Tsangpo. In Assamese, it is called the Luit. In Bangladesh, it is known as the Jamuna.

The river begins its journey in the high mountains of Tibet. It originates on the Angsi Glacier near Mount Kailash. This area is on the northern side of the Himalayas. From its source, the river flows east for a long distance. It runs between the Himalayas to the south and the Kailas Range to the north. During this stage, the river receives several important tributaries. The Raka Zangbo and the Lhasa join it from the left bank. The Nyang Qu meets it from the right bank. After passing Pi, the river turns sharply toward the north and northeast. It cuts through narrow, deep gorges between mountain massifs. One famous section is the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon. The canyon walls rise up for thousands of meters on each side.

After exiting the mountains, the river enters India. It crosses the China-India line of actual control into Arunachal Pradesh.

In this state, the river is called the Siang or Dihang. It makes a rapid descent from its high mountain altitude. The river then flows into the Assam Valley. Here, it is joined by the Dibang and Lohit rivers. Once these join, the river is called the Brahmaputra. It becomes very wide in the Assam plains. In some parts, the width reaches 9.5 kilometers. The river's path is shaped by geological forces. The Brahmaputra is an antecedent river. This means the river existed before the Himalayas were even formed. In Bangladesh, the river system becomes even more complex. The Brahmaputra is joined by the Teesta River. Below this, the river splits into two main branches. The western branch is the Jamuna. It carries most of the water and flows south. The eastern branch is the Old Brahmaputra.

The Jamuna eventually merges with the Ganges, which is called the Padma in Bangladesh. These waters then meet the Meghna River. Finally, the water empties into the Bay of Bengal. This area forms the Ganga-Brahmaputra Delta. This delta is one of the largest in the world.

The hydrology of the river is extremely powerful. The Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna system has the second-greatest discharge on Earth. The Brahmaputra alone provides about 50% of that total discharge. The river also carries a massive amount of sediment. Sediment is the sand, silt, and clay carried by water. The combined sediment load of this river system is 1.87 billion tonnes per year. This is the highest in the world.

The river also exhibits a tidal bore. A tidal bore is a strong wave that travels up a river during high tide. This is a rare feature for a river of this size.

Climate plays a major role in how the river behaves. The river has two high-water seasons. The first season is in early summer due to melting snow. The second season is in late summer due to monsoon rains. Rising temperatures cause more snow to melt in the mountains. This increase in melting leads to higher water levels downstream. This can cause catastrophic flooding and erosion. The river is very important for the people living nearby. It is used for irrigation to grow crops. It is also a major route for transportation.
