Different places in the world grow blackberries in different ways. Mexico is a very big producer of blackberries for the world. In 2017, Mexico provided almost all the fresh blackberries sent to the United States. In the United States, Oregon is the leader in growing them for business. Some special plants, like the 'Illini Hardy', can survive very cold winters. This variety survived temperatures as low as -20°F in Illinois. Other types, like the 'Tupy' from Brazil, are very popular in Mexico. Scientists use these different varieties to make sure we have fruit all year.

Much of this production uses the 'Tupy' cultivar, which was released in Brazil in the 1990s. In the United States, Oregon is the top commercial producer, having produced 110 million pounds in 2017. Because some regions lack the winter chilling needed for flower buds, farmers may use chemical defoliation or growth regulators to help the plants bloom.

Blackberries play a vital role in local ecosystems. The leaves serve as food for various caterpillars and grazing mammals like deer. When the berries are ripe, they are eaten by birds and mammals, including the red fox, American black bear, and Eurasian badger. As these animals eat the fruit, they disperse the seeds to new locations. However, growers must watch for pests like the spotted-wing drosophila. This insect lays eggs under the soft skin of fresh fruit, where the larvae grow and destroy the crop.
