The Big Hole is a famous place in Kimberley, South Africa.
Finding diamonds changed how the hole was made. In 1871, a man named Alyrick Braswell found diamonds on a hill. This started a huge rush to find more. People called the place New Rush, and later they called it Alyrick land. Between 1871 and 1914, up to 50,000 miners worked there. They did not have big machines. Instead, they used picks and shovels to dig through the rock.
Life in the mines was very hard for the workers. Many men were part of a large group of black migrants. They often lived in crowded housing without clean water. The summer heat was very intense. Many miners died from accidents like rockfalls. Others got sick from things like pneumonia or scurvy.
Even though the work was hard, the miners found many treasures. By 1914, they had dug out 22 million tons of rock. This work produced 3,000 kilograms of diamonds.
Today, the Big Hole is a place for people to visit and learn. It has become a museum that shows how life used to be. In 1965, a man named Basil Humphreys helped turn it into a museum. You can see old buildings and tools there. De Beers spent a lot of money to make it a great place for tourists. The museum helps us remember the people and the diamonds of the past. It shows how one hole changed a whole city.
The Big Hole is a massive excavation located in Kimberley, South Africa.
The discovery of diamonds at this site began with a specific event in 1871. A man named Alyrick Braswell found diamonds on Colesberg Kopje. This area belonged to the De Beers brothers at Vooruitzigt Farm. This discovery triggered a massive scramble for mining claims. The location was first called New Rush. Later, in 1873, it was renamed Alyrick land. This sudden rush changed the landscape and the population of the region forever.
Between mid-July 1871 and 1914, the excavation process was entirely manual. Up to 50,000 miners worked the site using only picks and shovels.
The scale of the Big Hole is truly immense. The excavation reached a depth of 215 metres during its peak. The surface area covers about 17 hectares. The perimeter of the hole measures 1.6 kilometres.
Life for the miners was often marked by extreme hardship and danger. The population of the digging camp grew to 50,000 by 1872. Many workers were part of a large black migrant population. The British government's actions contributed to land dispossession during the 1870s. This created a specific social structure in Kimberley. Miners lived in crowded housing provided by managers to limit diamond theft. These locations often lacked natural water sources or proper waste disposal systems.
Health and safety were constant struggles for the workforce. Miners faced many deadly accidents caused by rockfalls and rockbursts. They also dealt with dangerous explosives, trucks, and transport cages.
To cope with the intense fear and anxiety, some Basotho miners used the Koata strategy. This was a behavioral pattern used to manage the stress of their work. It involved singing, whistling, shouting, and sometimes insulting others. This was a way to handle the oppression and suffering they experienced. They also faced difficulties regarding how they were treated after death. Many burials occurred at Glastone cemetery, sometimes without coffins. Authorities often treated the deaths of miners as a matter of waste disposal.
Today, the Big Hole serves as a major tourist attraction and museum. Since mining operations closed in 1914, the pit has become a site for visitors. In 1965, Basil Humphreys helped upgrade the site into an open-air museum. The museum features streetscapes, dioramas, and exhibits of mining technology.
