Bhumibol was born in the United States on December 5, 1927. He was born at Cambridge Hospital in Massachusetts. His father was Prince Mahidol Adulyadej, the Prince of Songkla. Because his father studied at Harvard University, Bhumibol was the only hereditary monarch born in the U.S.

His name, Bhumibol Adulyadej, comes from Sanskrit. It translates to "Strength of the Land, Incomparable Power." He spent much of his youth living and studying in Switzerland.

His path to the throne followed a difficult period for his family. His older brother, King Ananda Mahidol, died in June 1946. The circumstances of the King's death by a gunshot wound were mysterious and unclear.

An investigation committee ruled that an accidental self-inflicted shot was virtually impossible. Following this event, Bhumibol ascended the throne. He eventually returned to Thailand to prepare for his royal duties. He studied law and political science to help him lead the nation.

In 1950, Bhumibol was officially crowned King of Thailand. This was the first coronation held under a constitutional monarchy system. During the ceremony, he pledged to reign for the happiness of the Siamese people. He married Mom Rajawongse Sirikit Kitiyakara in April 1950. She became Queen Sirikit. They had four children together.

One of their children, King Maha Vajiralongkorn, later succeeded him as King Rama X.

During his long reign, Thailand underwent massive economic changes. Between 1985 and 1994, Thailand had the fastest-growing economy in the world. The World Bank confirmed this rapid growth. ] ] Many international journalists predicted Thailand would become an "Asian Tiger." This era also saw the rise of an urban middle class. However, the 1997 Asian financial crisis ended this rapid growth. This crisis led to political instability throughout the 2000s and 2010s.

Bhumibol's rule was also marked by shifts in government power. Thailand experienced periods of democratization and frequent military coups. For example, a coup in 2014 ended 20 years of civilian government.

This event saw the military regain influence in Thai politics. Despite these political shifts, the King remained a central figure. He was highly revered by the Thai people. Some citizens viewed him as being close to divine.
