For three days, the situation inside the school was very hard. The attackers did not let the hostages eat or drink. They called this a "hunger strike." The attackers also made threats to keep the police away. They said they would hurt many hostages if the government attacked. On the first two days, some people tried to talk to the attackers. A doctor named Leonid Roshal tried to help negotiate. He hoped to help release some of the children. However, the negotiations did not lead to a peaceful end.
On the third day, the event became very violent. Russian security forces, including special units like Alpha and Vympel, moved in.
The Beslan siege changed many things in Russia. It led to new rules for the government and more power for the President.
The Beslan school siege was a major terrorist attack in Russia. It occurred from September 1 to September 3, 2004. The event took place at School Number One in Beslan. Beslan is a town in the Republic of North Ossetia–Alania.
The attack began on a day called Knowledge Day. This is also known as the "First Bell." On this day, children and parents attend school ceremonies. Because of these festivities, many more people were at the school than usual. A group of several dozen armed nationalist guerrillas arrived at the school. They were members of the Riyad-us Saliheen group. This group was sent by the Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev. The attackers demanded that Russia recognize the independence of Chechnya.
The attackers arrived in a GAZelle police van and a GAZ-66 military truck. At first, some people mistook the militants for special forces. They thought the men were practicing a security drill. However, the attackers began shooting in the air. They forced everyone from the school grounds into the building. During the initial chaos, up to 50 people managed to flee. Some hostages also managed to hide in the school boiler room. After a shootout with police and a local civilian, the militants seized the building.
The militants herded the hostages into the school gymnasium. This gym was a recent addition to the school. The attackers used improvised explosive devices (IEDs) to mine the gym. They also surrounded the area with tripwires.

During the first two days, negotiations were attempted. A pediatrician named Leonid Roshal tried to negotiate the release of children. However, the negotiations did not lead to a peaceful resolution. While some officials sought a peaceful end, the FSB set up a separate headquarters. This "heavy" headquarters prepared for a military assault. The attackers made specific threats to deter rescue attempts. They said they would kill 50 hostages for every one of their members killed. They also threatened to blow up the school if forces attacked.
On the third day, Russian security forces stormed the building. This included elite Spetsnaz units like Alpha and Vympel.
The siege had major political and security repercussions in Russia. It led to federal government reforms. These reforms consolidated power in the Kremlin. They also strengthened the powers of the President of Russia. Many people have criticized how the government managed the crisis. There are ongoing questions about the use of excessive force. Some people also allege there was disinformation and censorship in the news media.
