The Berlengas are small islands in the sea.

The islands are made of pink rock. This rock is very rare in Europe. There is not much soil here. Because of this, only a few plants grow.
Many sea birds live on the islands.

The Berlengas are a Portuguese archipelago located in the Atlantic Ocean. These small islands sit off the coast of Peniche in the Oeste region of Portugal.

The islands are formed by unique geological processes. Most of the archipelago consists of pink granite. This specific type of rock is very rare in Europe but common in America.
Geologists believe the archipelago may have originated as a horst. A horst is a raised block of the Earth's crust. The islands likely spent long periods underwater in the past. Evidence for this includes a flat surface on Berlenga Grande called a marine abrasion platform. This platform contains potholes formed while the land was at the bottom of the sea. There are also marine terraces that look like old beaches at high altitudes. These features suggest that sea levels changed significantly during quaternary glaciations. The islands also show evidence of being part of a larger block in the past.
Human history on the islands spans thousands of years. Ancient writers like Ptolemy referred to the islands as Londobris. Roman geographers later called the island Saturno. Over time, Muslims, Vikings, and privateers all visited the area. In 1513, monks from the Order of São Jerónimo established a settlement. They built the Monastery of the Misericórdia da Berlenga to help sailors. This monastery provided aid to victims of frequent shipwrecks. However, the monks eventually left due to disease and poor communication caused by bad weather.
Later, the islands served a defensive purpose. During the reign of King John IV, the council of war used monastery ruins to build a fort. This is the Fort of São João Baptista das Berlengas.
The climate of the Berlengas is a Mediterranean type, specifically classified as Csb. The weather is strongly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean and strong winds.
Life on the islands is highly specialized. There are about 100 plant species, including endemics like Armeria berlengensis.
