Bergamo has a very long and interesting history. Long ago, the city was first settled by a tribe called the Orobii. Later, the Celtic tribe of Cenomani conquered the area around 550 BC. By 49 BCE, it had become a Roman municipality. The city saw many changes through the centuries. It was once the seat of an important Lombard duchy. In the 15th century, the Republic of Venice took control of the city. This long period of Venetian rule left many marks on the city. You can still see the Lion of Saint Mark on some buildings today.

There are many amazing things to see and do in Bergamo. In the Upper City, you can visit the Piazza Vecchia. This is a famous square with many historic buildings. You can also see the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. This beautiful church was built starting in 1137. Another great place is the Angelo Mai library.

The city is positioned northeast of Milan. It is also located near several major Italian lakes, including Lake Como, Lake Iseo, Lake Garda, and Lake Maggiore. As a major urban center, Bergamo is the fourth-largest city in Lombardy. It also ranks as the 34th-largest city in Italy. The broader metropolitan area contains slightly fewer than 500,000 inhabitants. This area is part of the larger Milan metropolitan area, which houses over eight million people.

The geography of Bergamo is defined by two distinct urban centers. The first is the Città Alta, or Upper City, which is a medieval core nestled within a system of hills. This historic area is encircled by massive Venetian defensive walls. These fortifications were built in the 16th century. Because of their historical importance, they were named a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 9 July 2017. The second center is the Città Bassa, or Lower City.

Historians have debated the etymology, or the origin of the name, of Bergamo. In classical Latin, the name was Bergomum. Local historian Bortolo Belotti suggested the name has Celtic roots. In the Celtic language, the word "berg" means a protection, abode, or fortification. Another theory suggests a Proto-Germanic origin. This theory links the name to *berg + *heim, meaning "mountain home." However, some scholars note a lack of evidence for Germanic settlements before the Lombards arrived. The city was first settled by the Orobii, a Ligurian tribe, during the Iron Age. Later, the Celtic Cenomani tribe conquered the area around 550 BC. By 49 BCE, it had become a Roman municipality.

The history of Bergamo is marked by many different ruling powers. In the 6th century, it served as a seat for one of the most important Lombard duchies. After Charlemagne conquered the Lombard Kingdom, it became a county. During the Middle Ages, Bergamo was an independent commune. It was a member of the Lombard League, which defeated Frederick I Barbarossa in 1165. In 1428, the Republic of Venice took control of the city. This Venetian rule lasted for a long time and shaped the city's architecture. Later, during the Italian Wars between 1494 and 1559, fortifications became more advanced. Cities used detached bastions to withstand heavy artillery fire.

In the 19th century, Bergamo underwent significant political changes. The Congress of Vienna in 1815 assigned the city to the Austrian Empire. This period saw the opening of a new boulevard and the inauguration of a railway station in 1857. Eventually, Giuseppe Garibaldi conquered Bergamo in 1859 during the Second Italian War of Independence. This led to the city joining the newly founded Kingdom of Italy. Bergamo is often called "Città dei Mille," or City of the Thousand. This name honors the many people from the area who supported Garibaldi's expedition. In the 20th century, the city became a highly industrialized region. A new urban master plan was implemented between 1912 and 1927.

The Upper City contains many important cultural and religious sites. One major site is the Piazza Vecchia, which serves as a central square. The Palazzo della Ragione, built in the 12th century, was once the seat of city administration. Visitors can also see the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. This building was constructed starting in 1137 and features a Romanesque structure. The Cappella Colleoni is another masterpiece of Renaissance architecture located near the basilica. For those interested in books, the Palazzo Nuovo houses the Angelo Mai library.

The Lower City functions as the modern heart of the region. It is divided into twenty-five different neighborhoods. These include areas such as Borgo Palazzo, Borgo San Leonardo, and San Paolo. The city is also a major hub for travel and commerce. The Il Caravaggio International Airport is the third-busiest airport in Italy. In 2017, it handled 12.3 million passengers. The A4 motorway provides essential links to other major cities like Milan, Verona, and Venice. Today, Bergamo remains the second most visited city in Lombardy, proving its lasting importance to Italy.
