Benthos come in many sizes. Macrobenthos are large enough to see with your eyes. These include crabs and lobsters. Meiobenthos are tiny animals. Microbenthos are even smaller. They are microscopic, which means you need a microscope to see them. Bacteria are part of this group.

Life here depends on the bottom. Some animals live on the surface of the sand. We call these epifauna. Other animals live buried in the mud. These are called infauna.

In the deep ocean, there is no light. This is called the aphotic zone. Because there is no light, plants cannot grow. Instead, animals eat organic matter that drifts down from above. This falling food is called marine snow.

In the deep ocean, the water is part of the aphotic zone, which means no daylight reaches it. Since there is no light, animals cannot use it for energy. Instead, they rely on organic matter drifting down from above. This falling material is called marine snow.

Researchers still find amazing things in the deep sea today. For example, some tiny organisms called endoliths might be millions of years old. Scientists even use the shells of tiny creatures to learn about Earth's past climates. These shells hold clues about how warm or cold the water was long ago.

There are many different types of benthos based on their size. Macrobenthos are large enough to see with your eyes, like crabs or sea anemones. Meiobenthos are much smaller, often between 0.1 and 1 millimeter. The smallest group is microbenthos, which are microscopic like bacteria.

There are over one million different species of benthic animals. This is much more than the number of animals living in the open water above. Some live on top of the sediment, called epifauna, while others burrow inside, called infauna.

Living at the bottom can be a hard job due to the pressure. For every 10 meters of depth, the pressure increases by one atmosphere. Many creatures are adapted to this weight and cannot survive in shallow water. The seafloor also changes from place to place. It can be made of soft mud, sand, or hard rocks.

Some animals, like oysters, attach to rocks. Others, like worms, find safety by burrowing into the loose sand. This variety of homes allows many different kinds of life to thrive.

This zone is vital because it hosts a massive variety of life. The benthic zone offers much more physical diversity than the pelagic zone above it. The pelagic zone is the water column that sits above the benthos.

Life in the benthic zone depends heavily on the substrate, which is the bottom surface. This substrate can be sand, mud, clay, or rocky outcrops. The benthic boundary layer is a specific part of this zone. It includes the bottom layer of water and the top layer of sediment. This layer is directly influenced by the water flowing above it. It plays a huge role in the biological activity of the area.

Different animals use these surfaces in different ways. Sessile species, meaning they are fixed in one place, like oysters, attach to hard rocks. Other animals are mobile and move across the surface or through the sediment.

In the ocean, the benthic zone has many distinct stages and physical parts. It begins at the shoreline in the intertidal or littoral zone. From there, it extends across the continental shelf. The continental shelf is a part of a tectonic plate that extends from the land. At the edge of this shelf, the ground drops steeply. This steep area is known as the continental slope.

The slope leads down to the abyssal plain. This is a very flat part of the deep-sea floor. The ocean also contains submarine ridges, seamounts, and deep trenches called the hadal zone.

Energy sources change as you move deeper into the water. In shallow benthic systems, light is a primary energy source. However, light is absorbed by water as it goes deeper. The deep ocean reaches the aphotic zone, where no daylight penetrates. In these dark areas, organisms cannot use photosynthesis. Instead, they rely on marine snow. Marine snow is organic matter that drifts down from the upper water column. This dead and decaying matter sustains the deep-sea food chain. Most organisms there are scavengers or detritivores that eat this falling material.

This group includes bacteria, diatoms, and amoeba. There is a massive amount of life in this zone. The number of benthic animal species exceeds one million. This is much higher than the number of pelagic species, such as the 22,000 species of pelagic fish.

Living in the benthic zone requires special adaptations to survive. One major challenge is the intense water pressure. Pressure increases by approximately one atmosphere for every 10 meters of depth. Many organisms are piezophiles, which means they thrive under high pressure. They cannot survive in the shallower parts of the water column. Animals also adapt based on where they live in the sediment. Epifauna live on the surface of the ocean floor. Infauna live burrowed inside the sediment.
