Because of this, he left his own side. He joined the British army instead. This was a very sad choice.

When the American Revolutionary War began, Arnold joined the army. He was a brave and smart leader. He helped capture Fort Ticonderoga in 1775. He also fought in the Battles of Saratoga. For his hard work, he became a major general. General George Washington trusted him very much. Washington even gave him command of West Point. 
But Arnold was unhappy. He felt he was not treated fairly. He also owed a lot of money. Arnold made a secret plan to switch sides. He wanted to give West Point to the British. 
In 1780, people found the secret plan. A British officer named John André was caught with the papers.

Arnold was born on January 14, 1741, in Norwich, Connecticut. He was the second of six children in his family. Sadly, most of his siblings died from yellow fever during childhood. His father, Benedict Arnold III, was a successful businessman. However, his father struggled with alcoholism and poor health. After his mother died in 1759, Arnold had to support his father and sister. He learned business through a seven-year apprenticeship with his mother's cousins.
By 1762, Arnold was an established merchant in New Haven, Connecticut. He worked as a pharmacist and a bookseller. He was very successful and expanded his business quickly. He even owned three trading ships for the West Indies trade. 
When the Revolutionary War began, Arnold joined the American cause. He was elected a captain in the Connecticut militia in 1775. He showed great bravery and intelligence in several early battles. In 1775, he helped capture Fort Ticonderoga in upstate New York. In 1776, he used clever tactics at the Battle of Valcour Island. He also played a key role in the 1777 Battles of Saratoga. 

Despite his success, Arnold felt deeply unhappy with the American leadership. He believed the Continental Congress passed him over for promotions. He also felt other officers received credit for his hard work. At the same time, he was struggling with heavy debts. Arnold began secret negotiations with the British to switch sides. He married Peggy Shippen, who was a friend of British Major John André. 
The plot was discovered in September 1780. American militiamen captured Major André while he was carrying secret papers. 

After defecting, Arnold led British forces against the American army. He led raids on Richmond and New London, Connecticut. 

Arnold spent his final years moving between England and Canada. In 1787, he moved to New Brunswick to run a merchant business. However, he was very unpopular with the people living there. He returned to London permanently in 1791. He died in London ten years later, in 1801. His legacy remains a significant part of American history. He is remembered for both his military skill and his ultimate betrayal of his country.
