The most defining feature of a beetle is its elytra. These are the hardened front wings that act like protective cases. Unlike most other insects, beetles use these elytra to shield their softer, functional hindwings. While most beetles have a hard exoskeleton, some species show variation. Rove beetles have very short elytra, while blister beetles have softer ones. Some water beetles have even adapted their anatomy for diving.
