A big fight happened long ago.
Long ago, a big fight happened.
In July 1187, a big battle took place in the Holy Land.
A leader named Saladin led a large Muslim army. He had about 40,000 men. He fought against the Crusader states. The Crusader army was led by King Guy of Jerusalem.
Saladin used a smart plan to win. He attacked the city of Tiberias. This made King Guy move his army away from water. The land was very hot and dry. The Crusader soldiers were very thirsty.
During the night, Saladin's men set fire to the dry grass. The smoke and heat made it harder for the Crusaders. On July 4, the battle began. The Crusader army was defeated. Most of their soldiers were killed or taken as prisoners. Because of this win, Saladin took back Jerusalem. This big change led to the Third Crusade two years later.
The Battle of Hattin was a major conflict in the Holy Land. It happened on July 4, 1187. The fight was between the Crusader states and the forces of a Muslim leader named Saladin.
Before the battle, there was a lot of tension between leaders. Guy of Lusignan was the King of Jerusalem in 1186. He led a group called the court faction. This group included people like Raynald of Châtillon and the Knights Templar. Another group was led by Raymond III of Tripoli. These two groups often disagreed on how to rule. Saladin was also growing his power in the region. He had already taken Damascus and Aleppo. He wanted to push the Christian Franks out of Jerusalem. In 1187, Raynald of Châtillon raided a Muslim caravan. This broke a peace treaty and made Saladin very angry.
Saladin used a clever plan to win the fight. He first attacked the city of Tiberias. This was a trap to make the Crusaders move. Raymond III of Tripoli told King Guy not to attack. He thought the army should stay near water. However, another man named Gerard de Ridefort said they should fight. King Guy decided to follow Gerard's advice.
Numbers show how large these armies were. Saladin brought about 40,000 men to the fight. His army included 12,000 regular cavalry riders. The Crusader army was smaller, with about 18,000 to 20,000 men. They had 1,200 knights from Jerusalem and Tripoli. The Crusaders were very thirsty during the march. Saladin's men even set fire to the dry grass. The smoke and heat made things much harder for the Crusaders. On the morning of the battle, the smoke blinded the Frankish soldiers. The Muslim archers then began to attack them.
The battle ended in a great defeat for the Crusaders. Most of their soldiers were killed or taken as prisoners. This loss changed the history of the region. Because of this victory, Saladin became the main power in the Holy Land. He was able to take back Jerusalem and many other cities. These losses were so big that they led to the Third Crusade. That new crusade began just two years later. The Battle of Hattin remains a very important event in history.
The Battle of Hattin was a decisive military conflict in the Levant. It occurred on July 4, 1187. The battle was fought between the Crusader states and the Ayyubid forces led by Sultan Saladin.
Before the battle, political tension divided the Kingdom of Jerusalem. King Guy of Lusignan led a group called the court faction. This group included the Knights Templar and leaders like Raynald of Châtillon. A rival group, the nobles' faction, was led by Raymond III of Tripoli. These factions disagreed on how to govern the kingdom. Meanwhile, Saladin was uniting Muslim territories under Sunni Islam. He had already captured Damascus and Aleppo. A peace treaty between the Crusaders and Saladin was broken in 1187. Raynald of Châtillon raided a Muslim Hajj caravan during this truce. This action made Saladin vow to kill Raynald.
Saladin used a strategic plan to lure the Crusader army into a trap. He assembled a massive force on the Golan Heights. This army included approximately 40,000 men. About 12,000 of these soldiers were regular cavalry.
The Crusader army gathered at Zippori before beginning their march. This force consisted of 18,000 to 20,000 men. It included 1,200 knights from Jerusalem and Tripoli. They also had 10,000 foot soldiers and many mercenaries. The army carried the relic of the True Cross as their standard. On July 3, the Crusaders began moving toward Tiberias. They were constantly harassed by Muslim archers. The march took them across very dry and arid land. The soldiers struggled to find enough water to survive the heat.
Saladin's forces used the environment to weaken the Crusaders. The Muslim army positioned itself between the Crusaders and the water. The Crusaders were forced to camp on a dry plateau near Meskenah.
The fighting was intense and disorganized for the Crusaders. The infantry fled to the Horns of Hattin to seek safety.
The significance of the Battle of Hattin cannot be overstated. It removed the ability of the Crusader states to wage war. As a direct result, Saladin became the pre-eminent military power in the region. He successfully recaptured Jerusalem and most other Crusader-held cities and castles. This massive defeat in the Holy Land prompted the Third Crusade. This new military movement began only two years after the battle. The conflict remains a central event in the history of the Crusades.
