A big fight happened long ago.
Long ago, a big fight happened.

The Battle of Grunwald was a very large fight. It happened on July 15, 1410.

The Battle of Grunwald was a massive event in medieval Europe.

The fight happened because of long disagreements over land and religion. For about 100 years, the Teutonic Order raided Lithuanian lands. In 1385, a big change happened through the Union of Kreva. Grand Duke Jogaila of Lithuania married Queen Jadwiga of Poland. Jogaila became King Władysław II Jagiełło of Poland. This created a personal union between the two nations.

Preparing for the battle took many months of hard work. A truce was signed in October 1409. Both sides used this time to gather their troops. They also sent many letters to argue their points. King Władysław II Jagiełło and Grand Duke Vytautas made a secret plan. They decided to unite their armies into one massive force. They marched together toward the capital of the Teutonic Order. This was a surprise to the Order. They expected the two nations to attack separately.
Many people fought in this large conflict. It is hard to know the exact number of soldiers. Some historians say there were about 43,000 people in the alliance. Others give much higher numbers. The Teutonic Order had about 23,000 soldiers. The Order had well-trained heavy cavalry. They even used bombards to shoot stone and lead. The alliance used many different types of units. They had banners for the Poles and the Lithuanians. One source, the *Cronica conflictus*, was written by an eyewitness. This is a very important record of the fight.
Today, the battle is remembered in many different ways. It is a symbol of national pride for many. People in Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine, and Belarus commemorate it. The battle has many names depending on the language. Germans call it Tannenberg. Lithuanians call it Žalgiris. Polish people call it Grunwald. In the past, some groups used the battle for propaganda. Now, historians study it with a calm and scholarly view. They look at the facts to understand the true story. The battle remains one of the most important victories in history.
The Battle of Grunwald was a massive military engagement in medieval Europe. It took place on July 15, 1410. This conflict was a central part of the Polish–Lithuanian–Teutonic War. The battle involved a powerful alliance between the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. They fought against the German Teutonic Order. This order was a crusading military group.

The roots of the conflict reached back many years. In 1230, the Teutonic Order moved to the Chełmno Land. They launched a crusade against pagan Prussian clans. By the 1280s, they had conquered and converted the Prussians. The order then turned its attention toward the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. For about a century, the order raided Lithuanian lands, especially Samogitia. This region was important because it separated the order's Prussian lands from its branch in Livonia.
A major shift occurred in 1385 through the Union of Kreva. Grand Duke Jogaila of Lithuania agreed to marry Queen Jadwiga of Poland. Jogaila converted to Christianity and became King Władysław II Jagiełło of Poland. This created a personal union between the two nations. This union removed the religious reason for the Teutonic Order's raids. The order's Grand Master, Conrad Zöllner von Rothenstein, challenged the sincerity of this conversion. He took the matter to a papal court. Despite this, territorial disputes over Samogitia and other lands continued.
War preparations began in earnest after an uprising in Samogitia in May 1409. The Teutonic Grand Master, Ulrich von Jungingen, declared war on August 6, 1409. The order initially invaded Greater Poland and Kuyavia. They burned the castle at Dobrin and captured Bobrowniki. A truce was signed on October 8, 1409, to allow both sides to prepare. During this time, King Władysław II Jagiełło and Grand Duke Vytautas developed a secret strategy. They decided to unite their armies into one massive force. They planned to march together toward the Teutonic capital at Marienburg.
The exact size of the armies remains a subject of debate among historians. No contemporary sources provide perfectly reliable counts. However, the historian Jan Długosz recorded the number of banners. Banners were the principal units of cavalry. He recorded 51 banners for the Teutons, 50 for the Poles, and 40 for the Lithuanians. Some historians, like Stefan Kuczyński, estimate the alliance had 39,000 men. He estimated the Teutonic force had 27,000 men. The Teutonic army had highly trained heavy cavalry. They also used bombards, which are large cannons that shoot lead or stone projectiles.
The battle resulted in a decisive victory for the Polish–Lithuanian alliance. Most of the Teutonic Order's leadership was killed or taken prisoner. This included Grand Master Ulrich von Jungingen. Although the order survived the siege of Malbork Castle, they suffered great losses. The Peace of Thorn in 1411 brought minimal territorial changes. However, the financial burden of war reparations caused an economic downturn. The order never recovered its former power. Internal conflicts also grew within their lands.
Today, the Battle of Grunwald is remembered through many different names. Germans call it Tannenberg, meaning "fir hill." Lithuanians call it Žalgiris. The name was first used by the writer Maironis in 1891. Polish people call it Grunwald. The battle is a symbol of national pride in Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine, and Belarus. In the 20th century, it was used in various propaganda campaigns. Modern historians now use a scholarly approach to study the event. They look at the facts to understand the complex history of the region.
