A big war happened long ago.

Long ago, a big war began in Europe.

In 1939, France and Britain declared war on Germany. This happened after Germany invaded Poland. For a short time, not much fighting happened. People called this the Phoney War.
On May 10, 1940, the war changed. Germany began a fast attack. They moved through Belgium and the Netherlands.
The fast German tanks pushed Allied troops back. Many soldiers had to flee toward the sea. British and French ships helped them escape from Dunkirk.
The Battle of France was a major part of the Second World War. It took place between May 10 and June 25, 1940. This conflict is also known as the Fall of France. It involved a large German invasion of several lands. These lands included France and the Low Countries. The Low Countries are Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands.
Germany used a special plan for this attack. The plan was called Case Yellow. It was also known as the Manstein plan. This plan relied on fast-moving tanks and planes. German armored units moved quickly through the Ardennes forest. They also crossed the Meuse River. They raced down the Somme valley to surround Allied troops.
Before the fighting started, there was a quiet period. This time was called the Phoney War. It happened after France and Britain declared war on Germany in September 1939. France had built strong forts called the Maginot Line. These forts were meant to protect the border. Many leaders thought the Ardennes forest was too thick for tanks. They believed the forest was safe from big attacks.
As the German attack grew, the Allied forces faced hard times. British, Belgian, and French troops were pushed back to the sea. A large rescue happened at a place called Dunkirk. This was known as Operation Dynamo. The British and French navies helped many soldiers escape. Later, Germany started Case Red on June 5, 1940. German troops reached Paris on June 14, 1940.
France eventually had to stop the fighting. On June 22, 1940, an agreement was signed. This was called the Second Armistice at Compiègne. A new group called the Vichy government took control. This government was led by Marshal Philippe Pétain. Germany occupied much of the country for a long time. France was finally liberated by the Allies in 1944.
The Battle of France took place from May 10 to June 25, 1940. It was a major part of the Second World War. This conflict is often called the Fall of France. It involved a large-scale German invasion of France and the Low Countries. The Low Countries include Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands.
Before the main fighting began, there was a period of relative quiet. This was known as the Phoney War. France and Britain had declared war on Germany in September 1939. This happened after Germany invaded Poland. During this time, the French army conducted a limited Saar Offensive. They moved into the Saar region but eventually withdrew to their starting lines.
France had prepared for a German attack by building the Maginot Line. This was a series of strong fortifications along the German border. The goal was to save manpower and force Germany to attack through Belgium instead.
Germany developed a new strategy called Case Yellow, or the Manstein plan. This plan was different from earlier ideas that suggested a frontal attack in central Belgium. Instead, German leaders focused on a breakthrough in the Ardennes.
On May 10, 1940, the German Wehrmacht began its invasion. German armored units moved through the Ardennes and crossed the Meuse River. They raced down the Somme valley. This movement cut off the Allied units that had moved into Belgium.
After the retreat from Dunkirk, Germany launched Case Red on June 5, 1940. This was the next stage of the campaign to finish the conquest. The remaining Allied divisions tried to hold the line on the Somme and Aisne rivers. However, they could not stop the German combination of air superiority and mobile armor.
The fighting ended when France signed an agreement called the Second Armistice at Compiègne. This was signed on June 22, 1940. A new group called the Vichy government took control of France. It was led by Marshal Philippe Pétain. This government replaced the Third Republic.
The Battle of France had massive consequences for the war. It showed that fast-moving tanks and planes could overwhelm traditional fortifications. The German success allowed them to control large parts of Western Europe. This changed the balance of power for the rest of the conflict. The fall of the French military was a turning point in the Second World War.
