The Battle of Austerlitz was a major event in the Napoleonic Wars. It took place on December 2, 1805. This fight is also called the Battle of the Three Emperors. It happened near the town of Austerlitz in the Austrian Empire. Today, that place is known as Slavkov u Brna in the Czech Republic.
Napoleon used a very clever plan to win the fight. He wanted to trick the Allied armies into attacking him. To do this, he made his army look weak. He even gave up a high area called the Pratzen Heights. This was a trap to lure the enemies into a specific spot.
Weather played a big part in how the battle went. An early morning mist covered the ground. This mist helped hide Napoleon's troops from the enemy. When the mist started to clear, Napoleon saw his chance. He sent Marshal Soult and his corps to attack the center. The Allied center was weak because they had moved to attack the French right. The French forces swept through the lines and won. This victory allowed the French to capture thousands of prisoners. The Russian and Austrian commanders were defeated in this battle.
Many important people and large numbers were part of this event. Around 158,000 troops fought in the battle. About 24,000 soldiers were killed or wounded during the fighting.
The victory led to the Peace of Pressburg on December 26, 1805. This treaty ended the war between France and Austria. It forced Austria to give up lands in Italy, Bavaria, and Germany.
The Battle of Austerlitz took place on December 2, 1805. It is often called the Battle of the Three Emperors. This major military engagement occurred near the town of Austerlitz. At that time, the area was part of the Austrian Empire. Today, the location is known as Slavkov u Brna in the Czech Republic.
Before the battle, the French Emperor Napoleon organized a massive force. He had previously built the Armée d'Angleterre to invade Britain. Although the invasion never happened, the troops received excellent training. Napoleon organized his army into seven corps. A corps was a large unit containing 36 to 40 cannons. These units could act independently for at least one day. By 1805, the Grande Armée had grown to 350,000 well-trained men.
In 1805, a group called the Third Coalition formed against France. This alliance included Great Britain, Russia, and Austria. The British Prime Minister, William Pitt the Younger, worked hard to build this group. Britain and Russia signed an alliance in April 1805. Austria joined the coalition a few months later. This group aimed to stop French influence in Europe. However, the coalition faced many challenges in coordinating their different armies.
Napoleon used a brilliant trap to defeat the much larger Allied forces. He wanted the Allies to think his army was weak. To do this, he ordered his troops to retreat from the Pratzen Heights. These heights were a dominant, high area near the battlefield. He also intentionally weakened his right flank. He hoped the Allies would attack there to break his line. While the Allies moved to attack the right, Napoleon hid his main force in dead ground. He also waited for Marshal Davout and the III Corps. Davout performed a forced march from Vienna to arrive just in time. His men held the defensive positions against superior numbers.
Weather and timing were essential to the French victory. An early morning mist covered the battlefield. This mist helped conceal the movements of Napoleon's troops. As the mist cleared, Napoleon saw the Allied center was weak. The Allies had moved their troops away from the center to attack the French right. Napoleon sent Marshal Soult and the IV Corps to strike the center.
The battle involved approximately 158,000 total troops. About 24,000 soldiers were killed or wounded during the fighting. The Allied side suffered a decisive defeat. This included many famous Russian commanders like Mikhail Kutuzov and Pyotr Bagration. The Russian Emperor, Alexander I, was the supreme commander of the Allies. He and the Austrian chief of staff, Franz von Weyrother, fell directly into Napoleon's trap. The disaster shook the will of the Austrian Emperor, Francis, to continue fighting.
The aftermath of the battle brought massive political changes. On December 26, 1805, France and Austria signed the Peace of Pressburg. This treaty officially took Austria out of the war. Austria had to pay an indemnity of 40 million francs. The treaty also forced Austria to give up lands in Italy, Bavaria, and Germany.
