Some balls are big. Some balls are small. Big balls are for men. Small balls are for kids. This helps everyone play well.

The ball is made of many parts. It has a rubber part inside. It has strong thread to keep its shape. It has a skin on the outside.

The skin can be leather. It can also be rubber. Many balls are orange with black lines. This helps players see them.

You can play inside or outside. Outdoor balls are made of tough rubber. They can play on rough ground. It is fun to play ball!

Most balls have three main parts. Inside is a rubber bladder that holds air. This is made of butyl rubber. It helps the ball hold its air for a long time. Next, thousands of meters of nylon thread wrap around the bladder. This thread keeps the ball in a perfect round shape. Finally, a skin covers the outside. This skin is often made of leather or rubber. Many balls have a pebbled texture. This helps players grip the ball better.

Balls come in different sizes. Men and boys ages 15 and up use a size 7 ball. Girls and women ages 12 and up use a size 6 ball. Smaller balls are made for younger children.

A basketball is a special round tool used to play one of the most popular sports in the world.

Without a court and a basket, the ball is the only other thing a player needs to start a game. During play, athletes must bounce the ball continuously, which is called dribbling. They also throw the ball through the air to teammates, known as passing, or aim for the hoop, which is called shooting. Some people even use the ball to perform amazing tricks called freestyling. They might spin the ball on one finger or roll it over their shoulders.

To work well, a basketball must be light, round, and very bouncy. It is built using three main layers that work together. First, there is an inner rubber bladder made of butyl rubber that holds the air inside. This material is very dense, which helps prevent air from leaking out. Next, thousands of meters of nylon thread are wrapped around that bladder. This thread is very strong and helps the ball stay in a perfect sphere shape. Finally, a cover is placed on the outside to protect the inner parts.

The outer cover is often made of leather, rubber, or a synthetic composite. Professional leagues like the NBA and WNBA use genuine cow leather for their game balls. This leather has a pebbled texture, which means it has many tiny bumps. These bumps create friction to help players grip the ball more easily. Some balls are made just for indoor courts to keep the leather soft. Other balls are made of tough rubber for all-surface use. These outdoor balls can handle rough asphalt and dirt without breaking.

Basketballs come in many different sizes for different ages and players. A size 7 ball is the standard for men and boys ages 15 and up. This is the size used in high school, college, and professional men's games. For women and girls ages 12 and up, a size 6 ball is the official choice. Younger children use even smaller balls, like size 5 for ages 9 to 11.

Even the 3x3 game uses a special ball that is the size of a size 6 but weighs as much as a size 7.

The history of the basketball began in December 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts. A teacher named James Naismith was asked to invent a winter game for athletes. The very first game was played using a soccer ball and two peach baskets.

Later, the company Spalding made the first dedicated basketballs after working with Naismith. Since then, many companies have made balls for different parts of the world. For example, the Japanese company Molten provides balls for many international championships. Today, these balls are used by millions of people everywhere.

A basketball is a specialized spherical object designed for the game of basketball.

It is the only piece of equipment required to play the sport, alongside a court and baskets. During a game, players interact with the ball through three primary actions. They must bounce the ball continuously, a skill known as dribbling. They also throw the ball to teammates through passing or aim it toward the hoop by shooting. Beyond formal games, people use the ball for freestyling. This involves performing tricks like spinning the ball on an index finger or executing complex aerobatic maneuvers during a slam dunk.

To function correctly, a basketball must possess specific mechanical properties. It needs to be lightweight for easy handling and shooting. It must be perfectly round to ensure a predictable trajectory when it hits the floor. The ball also requires elasticity to provide a consistent bounce. Finally, the ball must be durable enough to withstand repeated impact.

These qualities are achieved through a complex three-layer construction process. This design ensures the ball remains functional throughout many games.

The core of the ball is an inflatable inner bladder made of butyl rubber. This material is a copolymer consisting of 98% isobutylene and 2% isoprene. Butyl rubber is chosen because it has low gas permeability. This means it is very efficient at preventing air from leaking out through the material. The material has a density of approximately 920 kg/m^3. This high density helps pack the molecular chains tightly together. Additionally, butyl rubber provides essential vibration dampening. This viscoelastic property allows the ball to absorb and dissipate energy. This prevents the ball from transferring too much force back to a player's hands during a bounce.

Once the bladder is inflated, it is wrapped in thousands of meters of nylon thread. Manufacturers specifically use nylon 6,6, which is made from two monomers called adipic acid and hexamethylenediamine. This layer is vital for maintaining the ball's shape. Nylon has high tensile strength, which prevents the thread from snapping under tension. It also has a high tensile modulus of 3,103 MPa. This characteristic makes the material stiff and resistant to stretching. The nylon layer ensures the ball remains a perfect sphere even when subjected to high pressure or heavy impacts.

The final layer is the outer cover, which is made of leather, rubber, or synthetic composites.

Professional leagues like the NBA and WNBA use genuine cow leather. Leather is preferred because it offers excellent grip and shock absorption. It has a pebbled microstructure of randomly woven collagen fibers. This texture increases friction between the ball and the player's hand. Because leather is relatively soft, it has a tensile modulus of only 94–100 MPa. This allows the material to be shaped easily around the inner layers. However, leather balls are often designated for indoor use. Outdoor surfaces like asphalt can quickly ruin a leather ball.

Basketballs are categorized into different sizes to suit various age groups and skill levels.

A size 7 ball is the standard for men and boys aged 15 and older. This size is used in high school, college, and professional men's competitions. The size 6 ball is used for women and girls aged 12 and up, as well as boys aged 12 to 14. For younger players, size 5 is the standard for children aged 9 to 11. Even smaller options exist, such as size 4 for children aged 5 to 8.

Interestingly, the 3x3 basketball format uses a unique hybrid. It has the circumference of a size 6 ball but the weight of a size 7 ball.

The history of the basketball began in December 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts. James Naismith, a physical education teacher, invented the game to entertain athletes during the winter. The first game was played using a soccer ball and two peach baskets.

Shortly after, A. G. Spalding created the first dedicated basketballs at Naismith's request. Spalding became a major supplier for the NBA for many years. Today, other companies like Molten provide balls for international FIBA championships.
