His parents were Basil the Elder and Emmelia. He was one of ten children in his family. His maternal grandfather was a Christian martyr who died before Constantine I converted. His grandmother, Macrina, helped raise Basil and four of his siblings. These siblings, including Macrina the Younger and Gregory of Nyssa, also became recognized saints. Basil received a formal education in Caesarea Mazaca around 350. He later studied in Constantinople and Athens. In Athens, he became close friends with Gregory of Nazianzus.

His career path changed significantly after his time as a student. For about one year, Basil practiced law and taught rhetoric. Rhetoric is the art of using speech effectively. However, meeting the bishop Eustathius of Sebaste changed his direction. Basil abandoned his legal career to devote himself to God. He traveled through Palestine, Egypt, Syria, and Mesopotamia to study different religious lifestyles. He initially tried living a solitary life near the Iris River. Eventually, he realized he was drawn to a different way of living. He felt called to communal religious life rather than total solitude.

In 358, Basil began establishing a new model for religious living. He gathered disciples, including his brother Peter, on his family's estate near Annesi.

This community focused on three main pillars: community life, liturgical prayer, and manual labor. His mother and sister Macrina also joined this pious community. Along with Pachomius, Basil is considered a father of communal monasticism in Eastern Christianity. This system of living in a group became a foundation for the Eastern Church. His writings on these communal rules became very influential. He even collaborated with Gregory of Nazianzus on a collection of works called the Philocalia.

Basil's rise to leadership was driven by his intellectual skills. In 362, he was ordained as a deacon by Bishop Meletius of Antioch. Later, in 365, he was ordained as a presbyter in Caesarea. He was often called upon to assist because of his great mind. Basil and Gregory of Nazianzus worked together to debate Arian theologians. Arianism was a belief system that denied certain aspects of the Trinity. Through public debates, Basil and Gregory emerged victorious. This success led to Basil taking on administrative roles. In 370, he was chosen to succeed Eusebius as the Bishop of Caesarea.

As a bishop, Basil used his power to help many people.

During a famine caused by a drought, he organized a soup kitchen. He also built a massive complex called the Basiliad just outside the city. This complex included a hospital, a hospice, and a poorhouse. Gregory of Nazianzus said the Basiliad was like a wonder of the world. Basil also used his position to criticize public officials who were unfair. He encouraged his clergy to avoid wealth and to serve with worthiness. He even stood up to Emperor Valens regarding the limits of government power.

Basil's theological work was just as important as his social work. He wrote important books like *On the Holy Spirit*. This work argued for the divinity of the Holy Spirit based on tradition. He also wrote the *Refutation of the Apology of the Impious Eunomius*. This was a three-book response to the teachings of Eunomius of Cyzicus. Basil faced many challenges, including disagreements with other religious leaders. He corresponded with Pope Damasus to seek help against Arianism. Despite these tensions, his work helped define the boundaries of the church. He died in 379, likely from liver disease and the effects of his strict lifestyle.

Today, Basil's legacy remains very strong in many traditions.
