Basil I was a famous leader of the Byzantine Empire. 

Basil rose to power in a difficult way. He was close to Emperor Michael III. In 867, Basil helped kill the emperor to become the sole ruler. He started a new ruling family called the Macedonian dynasty.
Basil was a strong leader. He worked hard to fix the laws. He started a big project to collect all the laws into books. These books were called the Basilika. 


Basil I was a very important leader of the Byzantine Empire. 


Basil rose to power through a series of difficult and violent choices. He first became a close friend and bodyguard to Emperor Michael III. In 866, Michael made Basil a co-emperor. However, Basil later worried about losing his influence at court. On the night of September 24, 867, Basil organized the death of Michael III. 
As an emperor, Basil worked very hard to improve how his land was run. He did not have a formal education, but he was a respected leader. One of his biggest jobs was fixing the empire's laws. He started a massive project to collect all the laws into sixty books. These laws were called the Basilika. His successor, Leo VI, finished this huge task. The Basilika stayed as the law for the empire for a very long time.
Basil also led his armies to protect and grow his empire. In 872, his general Christopher defeated a group called the Paulicians. 
Basil's life ended in a very unexpected way in 886. He was out hunting when his belt got caught in a deer's antlers. 

Basil I was a powerful Byzantine emperor who ruled from 867 to 886. 
Basil was born to a peasant family in the theme of Macedonia. 
His early life was full of movement and hardship. One story says he was a captive in Bulgaria until the year 836. 
Basil reached the throne through a series of violent political shifts. In 866, Michael III named Basil as co-emperor. 
As a ruler, Basil focused heavily on legal reform. He is often called the "second Justinian" because of this work. He began a massive project to collect and organize Byzantine laws. This resulted in a collection of sixty books called the Basilika. He also created smaller legal manuals known as the Eisagoge. Although Basil started this work, his son Leo VI finished it. The Basilika remained the law of the empire for centuries.
Basil also managed important military and foreign affairs. In 872, his general Christopher defeated the Paulicians, a group that had rebelled. 
His final years were marked by family tension and personal loss. His eldest son, Constantine, died in 879. Basil also had a difficult relationship with his younger son, Leo VI. He suspected Leo might be the biological son of Michael III. This suspicion led to Leo being imprisoned for three years.
