Alchemists found that these stones could glow after being heated. In 1774, a scientist named Carl Scheele found that baryte held a new element. He could not separate the barium yet. Later, in 1806, Sir Humphry Davy used electricity to finally isolate barium. This was a big step in understanding the mineral.

Baryte is mined all over the world. In 2019, the world produced about 9.5 million metric tons.

China is a very large producer. They produced 3,600 thousand tonnes in 2017. India is also a big producer with 1,600 thousand tonnes. Other countries like Morocco and Mexico also mine it. Many different places have it, including the United States and the United Kingdom. It is found in many states like Texas, New York, and Nevada.

We use baryte for many helpful jobs every day. About 70% of it is used for drilling oil and gas wells. It is ground into a fine powder and mixed into drilling mud. This mud acts like a heavy weight. The weight helps push down on the well to prevent blowouts. This keeps the workers safe. Baryte is also used as a filler in things like paint and plastic. It can even help make car engines quieter. These were known as Bologna Stones. Alchemists noted that these stones became phosphorescent after being calcined, or heated. In 1774, Carl Scheele discovered that baryte contained a new element. He could only isolate barium oxide at that time. Two years later, Johan Gottlieb Gahn also isolated barium oxide. Finally, in 1808, Sir Humphry Davy isolated pure barium through electrolysis in England.

Today, baryte is mined in many countries across the globe. In 2019, global production was estimated at approximately 9.5 million metric tons.

This was a slight decrease from the 9.8 million metric tons produced in 2012. China is the largest producer, yielding 3,600 thousand tonnes in 2017. India follows as a major producer with 1,600 thousand tonnes. Morocco and Mexico also contribute significantly to the global supply. Mining occurs in many regions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and South Africa.

A massive portion of baryte is used in the oil and gas industry. Between 69% and 77% of all baryte is used as a weighting agent. It is mixed into drilling fluids, often called drilling mud. This heavy mud helps suppress high formation pressures during exploration. This pressure control is vital to prevent dangerous blowouts. As a well gets deeper, more baryte is needed in the mud mix. Baryte is also non-magnetic. This means it does not interfere with magnetic measurements taken inside the borehole.

To be used in drilling, baryte must meet strict technical standards. It is usually ground into a very fine, uniform powder. At least 97% of the material by weight must pass through a 200-mesh screen. The material must also be quite dense. It typically requires a specific gravity of 4.2 or greater. In 2010, the American Petroleum Institute updated standards to include 4.1 specific gravity materials. The mineral must also be chemically inert and soft enough to protect drill bits. These specific properties ensure the safety and efficiency of drilling operations.

Beyond drilling, baryte has many other important applications. About 15% of baryte is used to produce barium chemicals. Another 14% is used as a filler in automotive, construction, and paint industries. It can be used in radiation-shielding concrete and glass ceramics. It is even used in medical applications, such as barium meals for CT scans. Some baryte is used to make barium carbonate for LED glass. Even though barium is a toxic metal, barium sulfate is extremely insoluble in water. This makes the mineral safe for humans, animals, and the environment.
